What a great way to start the school year! Our Assistant Headmaster, Travis Casey, opened our Back-to-School Assembly with a powerful experiment involving our seniors.

The seniors were asked to circle together and depend on one another to help hold each other up. It was a simple demonstration with a powerful message: we are stronger when we support one another.

As we begin this new school year, may we remember that we don’t have to face challenges alone. We are a school family, and we are here to encourage, support, and lift one another up.

Here’s to a new year filled with teamwork, kindness, encouragement, and plenty of opportunities to help each other succeed. Let’s make it a great year, together! ⚔️🛡️

🎉 Orientation is TOMORROW! 🎉

We can’t wait to see our Crusader families Sunday (8/16) as we kick off a great new school year!

Because we have so many families joining us, we will have two orientation sessions:
🕑 2:00–3:30 PM | Last Names A–L
🕓 4:00–5:30 PM | Last Names M–Z

⭐ ALL 6th grade and NEW Middle School families should attend the 4:00–5:30 PM session, regardless of last name. A Middle School meeting for these students and families will be held at 5:30 PM in the gym.

If your household has multiple last names, please use the last name of the majority of the children in your home to determine your session.

Orientation will begin in the gym, followed by time to visit classrooms and grab some ice cream from The Front Porch Churn before you head home!

🚗 Important parking reminder:
Please help us keep traffic moving smoothly! The first group needs to leave promptly by 3:30 PM, and the second group should not arrive before 3:40 PM. We will not begin the second session while families are still arriving and parking.

🛒 Don’t forget your Ingles Advantage Card!
If you would like to register Laurens Academy as your charity of choice for Ingles Tools for Schools, bring your card with you tomorrow. We will have a table available to help you register. Cards must be registered each year.

🎨 Making Their Mark on LA

The Class of 2027 spent this morning putting their own personal touch on campus as they painted their senior parking spots!

Joined by parents, siblings, and friends, our seniors turned a row of parking spaces into a pretty great preview of the personalities of this year’s senior class.

A big thank you to Mr. Casey, Upper School Director, for joining the fun and keeping everyone fueled with a hot dog lunch! 🌭

🏈 September 7th – Hall of Fame Recognition
We will honor our Laurens Academy Hall of Fame members during halftime of the varsity football game.

🏆 September 25th – State Championship Team Recognition
We want to recognize every Laurens Academy State Championship team from every sport during halftime of the varsity football game.

Laurens Academy is also excited to announce the hiring of Gregg Nibert as the school's new Athletic Director and Varsity Boys Basketball Coach.

Coach Nibert brings with him one of the most distinguished coaching careers in South Carolina athletics. In 1989, he was named Head Men's Basketball Coach at Presbyterian College, a position he held for 28 years. During his tenure, he became the winningest coach in Presbyterian College basketball history, leading the Blue Hose through successful eras in both NCAA Division II and Division I competition.

Under his leadership, Presbyterian captured two South Atlantic Conference Championships and earned multiple postseason appearances, including four NCAA Division II Tournament bids and a historic Sweet 16 run.

While his accomplishments on the court are remarkable, those who know Coach Nibert often point to his greatest impact as a mentor, teacher, and role model. Former players consistently describe him as a steady presence whose influence extended far beyond basketball.

Following his retirement from Presbyterian College, Coach Nibert continued investing in young people through athletics and ministry. He spent one year serving with Fellowship of Christian Athletes, followed by two years as an assistant basketball coach at Spartanburg Christian Academy. Most recently, he spent five years as Head Coach at Spartanburg Day School, where he served as assistant athletic director and led the varsity boys basketball program to a state championship in 2023.

Away from the basketball court, Coach Nibert's commitment to serving others is equally inspiring. He and his wife, Peggy, have been married for 40 years and have opened their home to more than 50 foster children over the years. Together they have raised two sons, Shaun 36 and Van 32, and have faithfully invested in the lives of countless young people through their example of faith, compassion, and service.

Coach Nibert says, “I’m just very thankful for the opportunity to continue coaching and working with young people. I’ve known Coach Kirk for a long time. Excited to work for him and Laurens Academy.”

Laurens Academy is pleased to welcome Travis Casey as its new Assistant Headmaster and Upper School Director.

Coach Casey previously served at Laurens Academy from 2001 to 2011 as a Math Teacher and Upper School Director. During this tenure, he led the varsity baseball program to five state championships and guided the varsity girls basketball team to two state runner-up finishes.

Following his time at Laurens Academy, Coach Casey spent fifteen years at Oakbrook Preparatory School in Spartanburg, serving in a variety of leadership roles. Throughout his time there, he taught Math and Bible, while also serving as Athletic Director, Dean of Students, Director of Operations, FCA Huddle Leader, and Varsity Baseball Coach. His broad experience in academics, student life, athletics, operations, and school leadership has equipped him with a unique perspective on Christian education.

Outside of school, Travis and his wife, Michelle, have been married for 26 years and are the proud parents of three daughters, ages 23, 20, and 18. They are active members of Church at The Mill, where they mentor and lead a small group for young married couples. In his leisure time, he enjoys trout fishing.

Coach Casey says, "Returning to Laurens Academy feels like a very special homecoming. This school helped shape me as an educator and leader, and I am honored to have the opportunity to serve this community once again. I look forward to investing in both students and faculty, and helping Laurens Academy continue to flourish for years to come."
