📚 Did You Know?

One of the most recognizable illustrators of the beloved Dick and Jane reading books had a Laurens County connection! Robert Childress, whose illustrations helped generations of children learn to read, was from Laurens County, South Carolina.

For decades, Dick and Jane books introduced young children to reading through their simple stories and familiar illustrations. They became an iconic part of American elementary education and a nostalgic piece of childhood for millions of Americans.

We love discovering the people and stories that connect Laurens County to the larger story of American history and culture! ❤️📖

If Cousin It were a caterpillar, he might look something like this. The Puss Caterpillar or Asp (Megalopyge opercularis) is the caterpillar stage of the Southern Flannel Moth I wrote about yesterday. It’s one of the most venomous caterpillars in the United States. They feed on a wide range of trees, including oaks, elms, sweetgum, persimmon, apples, and pecan trees. There are two broods in the South, one in early summer and another in late summer to early autumn.

The Puss Caterpillar is covered in hair-like setae that conceal its venomous spines. If you touch one, some of these spines might break off in your skin and inject venom. The burning sensation and swelling can be quite intense and serious reactions can occur. Still, there is no need to kill or fear them, just watch where you stick your hands, or better yet, wear gloves and long sleeves while gardening.

There are a few different flannel moth species in the southeast, but the Puss Caterpillar tends to be the most common.
