I remember most of you best as awkward and weird. In all honesty, the best people remain a little awkward and weird even out of middle school.

Congratulations Class of 2021! I cannot wait to celebrate with you in a few weeks. Enjoy the last few days of school!

Class of 2020 💙💛

The world has different plans for your Senior Year. One day we'll all look back and remember the ride that was 2020. Today we're allowed to feel: be sad, be angry, be scared, be thankful, be happy.

I was going to wait until closer to graduation to share these photos, but I think you could all use them today. Enjoy!

My final last day of school at Laurens-Marathon…

As I sit here I realize it’s not the walls, the desks, the hundreds of paint samples, the drawings on the wall, the giant portrait of George Washington, the flag that always smacked me in the face, Carl Azuz and his puns, or the pencils all over the floor that made this our classroom. We built this together. It was ours.

One thing I learned in the last few weeks is the scariest thing to do is be happy, successful, comfortable, and surrounded by amazing people in a district you love and jump straight off into the unknown. Don’t be afraid to step outside of what is comfortable and change your path. The key is to have enough trust in yourself to know you can meet the new challenge head on.

I’ll miss you all. Lucky for us, Sioux Central isn’t that far and Laurens is still my home. I’ll answer if you need me. If I don’t it’s because I finally ran away to live at Mount Vernon. You’ll find me sitting on the front porch looking at the Potomac River. Or hiding in the trees because you cannot actually live there…

Have a great summer, read a book, be nice to your siblings, help your parents, and do something good for someone else. Whatever you put into the universe comes back to you. So make it positive.

I just put a dozen Jason Reynolds books into the universe. Have they been read? Probably not, but I hope that someday they take the time and the words speak to them!

What do you get when 6th graders create their own countries? Fire unicorns, teleporting trees, countries shaped like chickens, and brand new languages.
