Alena Analeigh Wicker is redefining what is possible for young Black women in STEM and higher education. At just 13 years old, she made history as the youngest Black person ever accepted into medical school in the United States, securing a spot at the University of Alabama’s Heersink School of Medicine. Wicker’s academic journey began far before her medical school acceptance. A prodigy from a young age, she was reading chapter books by age 3 and began high school courses at 11. By age 12, she had graduated from high school and was already enrolled in college courses at both Arizona State University and Oakwood University. Her passion for science led her to intern with NASA at just 13, where she worked on projects for the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, further solidifying her place as a leader in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). Alena’s accomplishments not only highlight her exceptional intellect and drive but also inspire future generations of young women, particularly Black girls, to pursue their dreams without limits. Her journey serves as a powerful testament to the transformative potential of education and ambition.
