Hey teachers, this low prep STEM activity is perfect for your K-5 learners! It's a great reminder that scientific thinking can start with something as simple as a handful of leaves and rocks.

This nature sorting activity gets students observing, comparing, and classifying the natural world around them. Working with several items from nature, students will choose one type of classification such as size, texture, color (or something else) to sort objects. When they're done, change the classification system and sort again.

These simple skills build foundations for more advanced science down the road, including biology, ecology, geology, and scientific data analysis. 🔬

This would be a great one to save for a cool, fall day when collecting objects can be part of the activity.

Did you know you can use cricket chirps to estimate the temperature outside?

Crickets are ectothermic, meaning their body temperature is affected by the environment around them. When it's warmer, the muscles they use to chirp can work faster. When it's cooler, their chirping slows down.

And here's the fun part: you can test it yourself! According to Dolbear's Law, count the number of cricket chirps you hear in 15 seconds, then add 40 for a rough estimate of the temperature in Fahrenheit. So, 35 chirps + 40 = about 75°F!

It's a pretty cool example of biology and math hiding in the sounds of a summer evening!

Creativity is not separate from STEM. In fact, it is one of the top skills required by STEM fields of study. Engineers imagine what does not yet exist. Scientists devise new ways to test what they cannot yet explain. Designers innovate new ways to combine function with human needs.

When children are given room to personalize, invent, and make choices within a challenge, they learn that there can be more than one thoughtful path to a solution. That is creativity, and that is where ownership in STEM learning begins.

Concentration sometimes just seems like something we demand from children. However, it is also something we help make accessible to them. How? By giving them work worth concentrating on.

When a hands-on challenge is interesting, purposeful, and appropriately difficult, children naturally slow down. They observe, make careful choices, and can persist long enough to see an idea take shape.

These moments of deep engagement matter. They strengthen attention, independence, and the confidence to stay with a problem...even when the answer is not immediate.

The goal of this challenge isn’t just to see which ice cube lasts the longest. It’s also to get students talking about how scientists test ideas.

A fair test changes just one thing while keeping everything else the same. When students use equal-sized ice cubes, identical cups, and the same testing time, they can see how changing only the insulation material affects the results.

This simple STEM project also introduces heat transfer: heat moves from the warmer surroundings toward the colder ice, causing it to melt. Insulation doesn’t create heat or cold, but it does slow that movement.

Simple materials like these can lead to meaningful conversations about evidence, problem-solving, and the science students encounter every day!

We hear these kinds of conversations all the time, and it's wonderful because it is exactly the way collaborative thinking and learning should look.
Children do not have to complete the same project in exactly the same way to learn alongside one another. Shared workspaces invite them to observe different approaches, exchange ideas, ask for help, and offer it.

We learn to read by reading. We learn to write by writing. And we learn how to solve problems by (you guessed it) solving problems!

This involves being curious, asking questions, and testing solutions. The freedom to practice being problem-solvers is vital to the children of today who will become the innovators of tomorrow.
