Did you see something amazing in the sky earlier today? This morning’s SpaceX launch had people looking up at, and sharing pictures of, a glowing “space jellyfish.” So what causes that incredible sight?

As a rocket climbs, its exhaust spreads out in the thinner, lower-pressure atmosphere, creating a huge plume. High above Earth, that plume catches sunlight while the ground below is still in darkness. The result is a luminous cloud with a shape that resembles a jellyfish! This doesn't happen during every launch, but sometimes conditions are just right to create this powerful image!

Educators, bring the wonder of space exploration to your school as an afterschool program! Developed in collaboration with NASA, our NASA ASTRO CAMP TO GO Club engages students in nine weeks of hands-on missions exploring Earth and space science, engineering, and problem-solving.

Field trips are a chance to learn together!

At Central Creativity, students aren’t just along for the ride. They get to participate, work together, ask questions, solve problems, and put their thinking into action.
We love seeing students gathered around a table, engaged with one another and with what they’re learning. These are the kinds of experiences that can make learning memorable for years after the field trip is over.

That first whiff of coffee, the warm, toasty smell of bread browning, and a nicely seared steak share a chemical reaction: the Maillard reaction.

In 1912, French chemist Louis-Camille Maillard described reactions between sugars and amino acids that help explain what happens when many foods brown during cooking. As coffee beans roast, this chemistry helps create their familiar nutty, toasty aromas. Similar reactions happen in bread crust and seared meat.

So why don’t they all smell exactly alike? Different foods still contain different mixtures of ingredients, which produce different combinations of flavor and aroma compounds. Science and cooking always go hand-in-hand, and science can often help us understand why things turn out a certain way in the kitchen (or why they don't!)

There is so much joy in the process of learning and doing: students measuring, mixing, observing, working together, and waiting to see what happens next. When they come here, students get to explore STEM concepts they’ve learned about in the classroom for themselves.

How many drops before it rains?

These students are exploring the water cycle by creating foamy “clouds,” then adding liquid, drop by drop, until “rain” falls through to the cup below. This simple model helps students explore precipitation, the part of the water cycle that brings water back to Earth as rain, snow, sleet, or hail.

This involves a bit of prediction, testing, and, of course, close observation. Students always watch closely with this one because they don't want to miss what happens next: the blue water breaks through the “clouds,” forming little beads that sink through the oil below!
