Latta High Robotics Club

Latta High Robotics Club Latta High School, in S.C., has two FTC robotics teams. Team 11841 are the STEAM Punks, and 12517 are the Robo-Zombies.

Our primary purpose is to create robots to compete in FTC matches...and to have fun.

A whole lot of action at our meeting this afternoon. Planning, brainstorming, prototyping modules, field construction...and maybe a little bit of fun.

We need to give a shout out of thanks to Michael Kupperman. He is an engineer who works at Wyman Gordon, here in Dillon County. He and a small group of folks from his work visited us late last season to share a lot about what they do at Wyman Gordon. That visit opened a door for Michael to join us as a coach and mentor. Besides an engineering background, he also brings his knowledge and experience from his participation in FIRST Robotics. Welcome, Michael!

A project years in the making is slowly progressing. A donated electric wheelchair frame has been effectively interfaced with a remote control system designed specifically for this project. It should have a range of over a kilometer with clear line-of-sight, though that is untested because we can't safely control it from that distance without 'seeing' what is in its path.

We need a video system like on drones or RC cars that will allow us to see in front of the robot so we can steer it without running into a ditch, pole, person, boulder, tractor, etc.

If anyone has such a system (transmit and receive) from an old RC drone or car to donate (or sell), we would be grateful! If you are familiar with how to interface it with telemetry, such as compass direction, that would be helpful, too. A transmitter that can be viewed from a kilometer, and maybe have the video received by multiple monitors is what we are hoping for.

If a used system is not available, perhaps someone could guide us in the purchase of a video system from a vendor.

The robotics club will have its first meeting of the season on Tuesday, Sep 2, at 3:30 at the LMS robotics lab (room 104). Anyone in 7th through 12th grade at Latta Schools is encouraged to show up. We will introduce prospective members to the old-timers and begin organizing the lab. Our lab was moved late last year and it is in real need of organization!

This will begin our regular Tuesday and Thursday meeting schedule where we meet from 3:30 to 5:30 to design, build, program robots, and also do 3D design and printing on our new, FAST 3D printers.

IMPORTANT: That Saturday, Sep 6, at 10am, we will meet for the competition reveal video that will be released at noon. There will be pizza and drinks for all who attend and show up by 10:15 (we need a headcount to place the pizza order). The video game reveal is always very exciting because it shows us exactly what our robots will need to do to compete on the field. To give you an idea of what a reveal video looks like (from a previous year) check out this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ewlDPvRK4U4
Note that the competition that will be revealed for this year will be COMPLETELY different from last year.

Let us know if you are interested!

Top three winners of the contest to drive across the room and out of the door. Trystan (2nd place), Conley (1st place) and Jayden (3rd place). We spent 12 hours this week coding Arduino Uno microcontrollers, and learning how glitchy technology can be. It was a lot of fun!

BIG shout out to Mike Allen of Adtek Advanced Technologies for his financial contribution to the team!! The kids will put it to good use as we get ready for next years competition. Once again THANK YOU!!

Last week, before our Easter break, some of our folks moved ALL of our equipment, bits, bobs, wires, gears, etc., from the old lab into the new one. They were Gabriel, Trystan, Jayden, Mads, Liam, and Elijah. We have not yet set everything up nice in the new location but that will happen next week and we will soon be back in operation. THANK YOU TO THESE NERDS for their invaluable effort!!!

A team from our local Wyman-Gordon visited us to celebrate the National Engineers Week. They gave a presentation that highlighted their robotics systems that play a huge role in their operation. They wrapped with a Q&A, then got our team to work building paper planes. We might be able to design, build, program, and operate robots, but we need serious help in making paper planes! THANK YOU to Wyman-Gordon for reaching out to us!
