Bearcat BEST Transition Program at Saint Vincent College Bearcat B.E.S.T. is a college-campus based transition program for individuals ages 18-21 with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The Bearcat B.E.S.T.

program was born of the need, expressed by parents of students with intellectual and developmental disabilities, for transition programming that would focus on the needs of young adults who, while they may not have the aptitude for post-secondary education, could achieve, with appropriate transition programming, a greater level of independence than a sheltered workshop would provide them. The goals of the program are to develop the students’ capabilities in each of the four pillar areas: academics, vocational training, activities of daily living and social skills. Program Objectives:

To increase the level of functional independence for all students in the program;

To prepare each program participant for an integrated, competitive employment environment;

To maximize independence in activities of daily living to empower each participant to live in the most independent setting possible; and

To assist each student in creating a family/community support system utilizing self-advocacy skills.

Fall is here! 🍂

First-year students in Language Arts Skills have been learning about the temperate deciduous forest biome and how deciduous trees change throughout the seasons.

Today, students put their learning into action by completing a scavenger hunt at the Winnie Palmer Nature Reserve at Saint Vincent College! They explored the nature reserve while searching for signs of fall, identifying the different layers of the forest, and enjoying the beautiful scenery along the way. 🍁

Student photographs will be posted later! 📸

Getting involved!

This afternoon, our Bearcat B.E.S.T. students took part in the SVC Involvement Fair! Students explored the many clubs and organizations offered on campus, visiting tables, learning about different opportunities, and even signing up to get involved.

We love to see our Bearcats doing great things! Nice job, Cole and Nick!

Cole Vay slapped home plate and screamed while his Wolverines 1 softball teammates mobbed Kris Cunningham against the fence behind home plate. Vay, a 22-year-old Perryopolis resident, waited 13 years for an opportunity to play a sport like baseball again. When the Special Olympics Westmoreland Count...
