At the beginning of summer we enjoyed a great science lesson about butterflies. We read a few books about the many changes they go through as they transform from caterpillars to butterflies. We used words like “chrysalis”, “metamorphosis” and “life cycle”. We got to see real baby caterpillars change over two weeks to eventually become butterflies.

We’re learning about bugs and taking a closer look at what makes each insect unique-here we sorted them by “wings or no wings”. We talked about which bugs we liked the best, which ones we thought would be mean or nice, and which ones might sting.

Skills practiced:
-fine motor and hand-eye coordination: using tongs to pick up and transfer items
-sorting based on visual characteristics-early classification skills
-communication: giving an opinion, describing what something looks like

Fun with Green Eggs and Ham!
What we learned and practiced using this favorite by Dr. Seuss:
-real chicken eggs can be different colors- not just white
-how to chop up ham using our safe cutting tools
-how to use our balance and coordination to carry an egg toy on a spoon from one spot to another
-how to peel a hard boiled egg
-how to paint and use our imaginations to create green egg splatters
-rhyming words

We began Dr. Seuss week with using one of his books to review the alphabet-both uppercase and lowercase letters. We had to find the letters in the rice, name them, and then place them with their matching card. We also practiced scoping and pouring the rice and following directions. We had an ABC breakfast with foods that begin with those letter, we read Dr. Seuss’ ABC book, and the morning snack was alphabet cookies. Again, we matched the cookies with the letters on our charts. Tomorrow is going to be all about Green Eggs and Ham!
