It's 11pm. The paper is due at midnight. You've deleted your introduction four times. Then you see the ChatGPT icon.
Fourteen seconds later you have a full essay. You cut the em dashes, delete the word "delve," and submit. Two days later: B-. Not bad for five minutes of work.
That's the problem. It works.
In a recent MIT study, students who used AI to generate their writing couldn't quote a single sentence they'd "written" minutes earlier. Writing has always been how we learn to think. Skip the struggle and you skip the thinking.
AI still helps, if you use it right. Brainstorm with it. Let it structure your messy notes. Best of all, tell it: don't write this for me, ask me one question at a time and wait for my answer. It pulls the ideas out of you while every word stays yours.
Everyone sounds the same now. The ones who don't will stand out.
