This month, children are encouraged and empowered to make a difference in their world! This can include being involved in a ‘feel good’ activity to show human kindness to those in need, spending time with an aging grandparent or neighbor, or simply giving a friendly smile to cheer someone up. Making a difference doesn’t have to involve a grand act. Children look to teachers, role models, and significant adults in their lives to provide direction and guidance on how to make a difference in their world.
National Make A Difference Day is an annual community service event which is held on the fourth Saturday in October. It has helped to encourage thousands of people across the nation to start making a difference in themselves and in the world. The ways to celebrate Make a Difference Day are limited only by your imagination and your willingness to contribute time and efforts to changing the world around you.

This month we will introduce the concept of responsibility. Model responsibility this month by doing the following:
• Review rules and discuss what responsible behavior looks like. When rules are broken, express the disappointment, but give assurance that they can and will do better.
• If age appropriate, review or delegate assignments or chores. When assignments or chores are assigned, children know what actions and duties they are responsible for. Following up each day will ensure they are following through with their responsibilities.
• Create a responsible community by encouraging children to help each other clean up and by giving them scenarios where one person in a group doesn’t do what they are supposed to do. How does that affect the group? Everyone is responsible for their part of an assignment.
• Encourage children to take responsibility for their mistakes instead of making excuses or blaming others. Instead of saying, “It broke” or “She did it too,” they should make statements like “I broke it. How can I fix it?” or “I did it. I won’t do it again.”

It is important for children to know their surroundings to create a level of security and safety; which in turn establishes an environment where learning can flourish. Children will learn about their community, the people in their community that provide valuable services for families and children, and how responsibility plays a role in everyday decisions and activities. Changes are happening in the community as the season changes, and people prepare for fall. Changes are explored in science with investigation of the states of matter: liquids, solids, and gases. Comparing, patterning, and measuring provide great opportunities for children to learn geometry skills and knowledge of mathematical operations. The focus will be on how to care for our community through recycling. This discussion and activity will contribute to children’s understanding of good citizenship. Learning about reuse, reduce, and recycle encourages children to look into the future and be aware of the impact they have on our environment.

Back to school time is notorious for spreading fall colds and illnesses. It is important to set good hand washing habits from the beginning of the school year to ensure healthy classrooms.
