When we asked young people from our Future Studios summer cohort what they want from learning experiences, they all had similar answers: More agency. More creativity. More meaningful work. A place where they feel like they belong.

The physical space at THIRD Street also played an important role in the fellows’ experience. When asked how the space made them feel, many gave it 9s or 10s for creativity, comfort and inspiration. Having more freedom in how they worked made them feel more responsible for their learning and ultimately encouraged a stronger sense of belonging.

If we want to build better learning experiences, we have to start by listening to the people they’re designed for.

The start of a new school year brings plenty of unknowns: new classes, new people, new ideas and new opportunities.

While the unknown can feel a little scary, it can also be exciting.

As Daz Weller, CEO of THIRD Street, shared in a recent conversation on the CFL Podcast:
“Nothing great happens without stepping forward into the unknown.”

Daz and Sean explored what it means to rethink learning, from building durable skills to leading with creativity and giving young people the space to explore what’s possible.

As a new school year begins, the unknown doesn’t have to be something to avoid. It can be an invitation to step outside a comfort zone, try something new and discover something you never knew you could do.

Sometimes, you don’t know what you’re capable of until you give yourself the chance to find out.

Sometimes going back to school is about more than getting back into a routine.

It’s about seeing your friends again, finding a teacher you connect with and having people who notice when you’re there and make you feel like you’re part of something.

That sense of belonging can make a real difference in how students experience school.

One of the major themes that came through during our recent Future Studios Fellowship Program was just how much relationships shape learning. When students feel connected to the people around them, they’re more likely to feel invested, engaged and that they have a reason to be there.

As we head into a new school year, and with September being Attendance Awareness Month, it’s a good reminder that belonging matters. Helping a student show up starts with helping them feel like they belong.

If we’ve learned one thing from young people, it’s that they want the freedom and confidence to pave their own paths. A conversation between CFL Youth Fellow, Akilah Bello, and her classmate, Gavin, sparked questions around what youth agency really means and what it can look like.

As a learner, you don’t have to have your whole future mapped out, you just need a chance to try something new. This could mean learning how to play the guitar, or testing out a new camera, or even trying a new sport.

Sometimes you discover what you’re good at by doing the thing you never thought you’d try.

Young people don’t need all the answers right now, they just want to feel like others are listening.

This summer, 30 young people joined our Future Studios Summer Fellowship, spending four-weeks creating, collaborating and exploring new possibilities for the future of learning.

Along the way, they developed new skills, tackled real-world challenges and discovered what can happen when curiousity and creativity are given room to grow.

We took away a few key insights as we listened to our fellows reflect on their experiences, what they gained from the program and why they encourage other young people to seek out opportunities like this.

Today’s learners are preparing for a world that looks very different than it did just a few decades ago.
