An audition for Las Vegas Academy is a two-year project. Families usually call me with four months to go.

By then the repertoire choice is already forced — there is no time to learn anything new well — and the slow work has nowhere to happen. Tone. Evenness. The ability to walk onto a stage and play while the hands are cold and two hundred people are quiet.

Started early it looks completely different. The first year is technique, built on pieces that stretch without breaking. The second is learning to perform them — for one person, then five, then a hall, again and again, until the stage stops being an event and becomes just a room.

The same shape works for the graded boards: ABRSM, Trinity, RCM, LCM, AMEB. The syllabus is the easy part. Playing it steadily, on a day you did not choose, for someone you have never met, is the part that has to be trained.

So if your child is aiming at LVA, the question for a teacher isn't «do you prepare students for auditions». It is «what will my child be playing eighteen months from now, and why that piece?»

The competition question parents ask most: is it worth it?

For most students, one or two a year - yes. Not for the trophy. For what happens in the eight weeks before it.

A deadline with strangers on the other side of it changes how a teenager practises. Everything gets slower, more detailed, more honest. Students come out of a competition preparation better than they went in, whatever the result.

The mistake is entering too many, or entering with repertoire chosen to impress rather than to fit. That is a teaching judgement, and it is one of the places where a teacher's own competition experience shows.

Counting doesn't usually fall apart on the hard bars — it falls apart right after them, when the brain relaxes. That's exactly where I tell students to count hardest.

«I think I've left it too late.»

Thirty-four. Fifty-one. Sixty-eight. The number changes, the sentence never does.

Adults almost never come to me for exams or competitions. They come because the week has swallowed them and they want one hour that belongs to nobody else. Because a piece has been sitting in their head since childhood. Because they are tired of being competent at things that pay and want to be a beginner at something that doesn't.

That changes how I teach. No syllabus you did not ask for. Real music from the first month, because an adult will not be persuaded to spend a year on exercises and should not have to. And a lesson that ends with a plan small enough to survive a working week.

What you have less of is time, which is exactly why the teaching has to be efficient. An efficient lesson is one where the person beside you can hear which finger caused the problem and show you, at the keyboard, what it should sound like instead. That is what real training buys you — less of your hour wasted.

A teacher who cannot play cannot show you.

This sounds obvious and it is the single most common gap in this profession. A great deal of piano teaching consists of "this is what it should sound like" - played, at tempo, right there, twice, until the student hears the difference between what they did and what the music wants.

If that demonstration never happens, the lesson becomes a description of music rather than music.

So ask. Any teacher worth a year of your family's time will be pleased you asked.

«How long before my child can actually play something?»

Parents ask me this in the first conversation and they deserve a straight answer: a real piece — one a grandparent recognises — usually inside three to four months. Not an exercise. A piece.

Three things decide it, and talent is not one of them.

Short practice every day rather than one long session at the weekend. A teacher who corrects the hand in week two instead of year two. And music the child actually wants to play, sitting alongside the Bach rather than instead of it.

The middle one is where the real difference lives. A small fault in hand position, left alone because it looks harmless at six, quietly becomes the ceiling on everything that comes after it.

That is why, when you are choosing, it is worth asking where a teacher trained — and worth asking to hear them play. We can only hear in a child what we can produce ourselves.
