In a medical school library where more than 97% of the collection is digital, a few shelves of physical books serve a purpose that no search query could ever satisfy. They invite students to slow down, step into someone else’s experience, and remember the human being behind a diagnosis.

That’s the idea behind the medical humanities collection at the School of Medicine Library. Curated by Katie Houk, undergraduate medical education librarian and associate professor, the roughly 400-volume collection brings stories, history, ethics, art, and even comics into scientific training.

Congratulations to Wendy Rein, our Information Literacy Fellow, the 2026 American Library Association Century Scholarship recipient!

While pursuing an MLIS degree at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, Wendy is supporting a research project to assess incoming first-year students' previous information literacy experiences, as well as assisting with the Lance & Elena Calvert Rising Researcher Awards.

The American Library Association (ALA) is pleased to announce the selection of Wendy Rein of North Las Vegas, Nevada as the 2026 ALA Century Scholarship Recipient.

Thank you to everyone who joined us last night to celebrate UNLV’s admission to the Association of Research Libraries.

We are proud to be the first institution in Nevada to join ARL. Membership connects UNLV with leading research institutions across the United States and Canada, strengthening our ability to support research, scholarship, and innovation at UNLV and throughout Nevada.

We were honored to mark the occasion with President Chris Heavey, Provost Lakshmi Reddi, ARL Board President Melissa Just, and many of our faculty, staff, donors, alumni, and campus partners.

Elaine and Tony Sanchez have dedicated their careers and volunteer service to libraries, education, and the Southern Nevada community. That lifetime of giving back is why we’re thrilled to name them the 2026 University Libraries Alumni of the Year.

Elaine has spent 16 years serving on the Las Vegas-Clark County Library District Board of Trustees, while Tony has supported UNLV Libraries Special Collections & Archives and the Oral History Research Center, including serving as an advisor for the Latinx Voices of Southern Nevada project.

We’re grateful for their service and support and look forward to celebrating Elaine and Tony with our alumni community during UNLV’s Rebel Homecoming next week!

Join University Libraries for the inaugural Lance & Elena Calvert Rising Researcher Showcase on Tuesday, September 1, from 4–5:30 p.m. in the Goldfield Room in Lied Library. The showcase will celebrate eight students whose outstanding first-year research projects demonstrate curiosity, creativity, and a commitment to learning. Following brief remarks, guests will have the opportunity to meet the award recipients, explore their projects, and hear directly from these emerging researchers about their work and discoveries.
