Coca-Cola Refreshing Films Contest Applicants!

The deadline for submitting to the Coca-Cola Refreshing Films Contest is coming up on Friday October 9th, 2026! I encourage all film students to apply. It is an amazing chance to win $26,000 to make a film for Coca-Cola!

You will need to submit a one page script, a budget and a signature page. I will be having a workshop on Friday October 2nd at 12 PM via Zoom to go over the specifics and answer any questions.

Please join us for a very special UNLV FILM Thursday, hosted by the College of Fine Arts Alumni Chapter.

HUZ: DRAWN TO LIFE (2026; dir. Don Hahn; documentary) is a celebration of perseverance, faith, and the enduring power of mentorship. It shares an intimate portrait of artist Ron Husband, a UNLV Art alumnus who broke barriers as the first Black animator at Walt Disney Animation Studios. Husband entered Disney’s rigorous training program in the 1970s and made vital contributions to animated classics while navigating high-pressure reviews and a life-threatening brain tumor.

RECEPTION (FDH lobby): 6:00 to 7:00 p.m.
SCREENING (FDH 109): 7:00 to 8:00 p.m.
Followed by Q&A with Ron Husband and film director Don Hahn: 8:00 to 8:45 p.m.

UNLV had an incredibly exciting guest on campus: Kate Beyda, the Executive Vice President of Physical Production for .line.cinema New Line Cinema, which is owned by Warner Bros. Discovery.

This opportunity afforded students an interactive four-hour producing workshop with a successful filmmaker in the studio system. The workshop detailed everything needed to create feature films and television series, from basic knowledge to accounting to clearances.

We are pleased to announce that FIRST PASS VEGAS (an open mic night for local filmmakers) is returning to UNLV FILM!

Thursday, September 17, 2026, at UNLV – FDH 109.
Doors open at 6:00 PM
Screenings begin at 6:15 PM

Complimentary non-alcoholic beverages and light snacks will be provided.

FIRST PASS VEGAS is a monthly showcase and feedback night where local filmmakers can share works in progress or completed projects, receive thoughtful, constructive feedback, and connect with other filmmakers and creatives in the Las Vegas community.

The idea is simple: a safe, supportive room where filmmakers can put their work in front of an audience, have a conversation about it, and make it better.

Selected filmmakers receive a 15-minute presentation block to screen and discuss their work. Projects can be at any stage of development—from concept to completion. Shorts, scenes, rough cuts, trailers, proof-of-concepts, music videos, or excerpts from larger projects are all welcome.

A few simple rules:

You must attend in person for your project to be presented.

Your presentation and audience feedback must fit within the 15-minute block.

Finished and unfinished work are both welcome—we especially encourage projects that can benefit from feedback.

FIRST PASS VEGAS is built around constructive, respectful feedback and supporting our local filmmaking community.

If you have something you’ve been working on—or know another filmmaker who does—we’d love to see it.

We’re now in the second week of the fall semester, which means two stellar events take place THIS FRIDAY.

The FALL ASSEMBLY is our way of jump-starting the academic year with a signature gathering that brings all film students together. This is your chance to network with other students, meet faculty and instructors, and find out about everything happening with UNLV FILM this year!

The second event is ORIGIN STORY: A Fireside Chat with Simon Robinson, President, Global Experiences and Worldwide Studio Operations, Warner Bros. Discovery. This is an INCREDIBLE opportunity for UNLV students to hear from a critical leader of the global film business who will share his invaluable experiences and perspectives.

All of your professors and instructors are aware of these events and will excuse you from your Friday course sessions to attend them.
