⭐ Groups and Workshops at UNLV

UNLV CAPS facilitates a variety of groups and workshops every semester. Learn about the differences between them with Danika Navar!

Transcript:

[ UNLV CAPS facilitates a variety of groups and workshops every semester.

These events are open to all eligible students, but what exactly is the difference between a group and a workshop, and how can you join?

Groups are supportive spaces for students to learn new skills with each other throughout the semester. There are many different types of groups available, however, these are reserved for active CAPS clients.

Spaces for new group members open at the beginning of each semester. So if you find one that you are interested in, be sure to call (702) 895-3627 for a consultation.

These consultations are 30 minute appointments that can be done in person or virtually, and will help determine if the group is a right fit for you.

Workshops are short sessions that educate participants on a certain topic. They include hands-on activities and sometimes even swag available for you to take home. They’re open to all students, meaning that you don’t need to be a CAPS client to join.

To join a workshop, check the Involvement Center website for any current or upcoming ones scheduled!

Flyers are shared all around campus and posted on our social media platforms under the handle . Keep an eye out for these flyers, and you might find a group or a workshop you’ll enjoy! ]

[ UNLV CAPS presents… “Coping With Stress: Part 3”

Hi, I'm Dr. Madison Hurley, she/her, I am a licensed psychologist here at UNLV CAPS.

Question 1: What method do you use to cope with stress?

My go-to method for dealing with stress is what's known as supportive touch, it's an element of self-compassion, in which you're taking a moment to give yourself a gentle touch to reset your feelings of safety, calmness, security, and activating your parasympathetic nervous system.

Question 2: How do you perform this coping method?

A way to perform supportive touch can look a little different for everybody. I like to put a hand on my chest and engage in some deep breathing. Others might not like that feeling, so something else you could do that's supportive touch is holding your hand, gently stroking your arms, or even giving yourself a gentle hug.

So, I like to place my hand on my chest, and take 2-3 deep breaths, and I'll let myself sink into the feeling of comfort. So, let me demonstrate that for you now.

(Inhale… exhale… inhale… exhale…)

Noticing the feeling of warmth on my chest, I'm letting myself sink into the feeling of comfort. And what I really like about supportive touch is that it's something you could easily do in a couple of moments. Sometimes we don't have a lot of time to take care of ourselves, and this is a really quick way to engage in some grounding. ]
