The way you talk to yourself is SO important! 👇🏽

The verbiage you use to push yourself forward makes a HUGE difference 💥

Allowing yourself to learn, grow, and develop at your own pace it what makes you, YOU. Just because you are not there "yet" does not mean you won't be there ever!

BUT the verbiage you use along the way makes a HUGE difference.

Conventional wisdom says that exercise contributes to weight loss because it burns fat. But the reality is, the amount of energy exercise “burns” isn’t significant AND the body compensates by increasing appetite and making you more tired and lethargic.

We compensate by eating more.

At an unconscious level, we respond to exercise by eating more because the body makes us more hungry.

At a conscious level, we respond to exercise by rewarding ourselves for our hard work by resting and relaxing, and sometimes indulging in foods we might not normally eat or eating more of the foods we might not normally eat so much of.

We’ve all been there. You suffer through a brutal workout, and because you think you burned so many calories, you reward yourself with a treat. OR you overeat something that you wouldn’t normally eat so much of.

We aren't telling you to cut out hard workouts, but we are telling you to be aware of how your body reacts and changes its normal habits when you're doing lots of intense exercise. More isn't always better!

💡 Did you know? 🤔 Fitness does NOT burn calories the way we think it does! Our overall metabolic rate for any given day is typically going to be about the same above a moderate level of activity.

Fitness DOES strengthen your body. Fitness strengthens muscles, bones, and organ systems.

🤸🏼‍♀️ Don't get us wrong, we LOVE fitness but its so important to know that the greatest benefits of exercise are the building of capacities, functions, and capabilities, the building of lean muscle mass, and the optimization of adaptive hormones, not just the burning of calories.

The reality is, just like our health medial system, this system has to make money. Diagnosing, treating, and prescribing are a big part of it.

🤔 What is functional medicine?

👉 “Functional medicine is a systems biology–based approach that focuses on identifying and addressing the root cause of disease. Each symptom or differential diagnosis may be one of many contributing to an individual’s illness.” - The Institute for Functional Medicine

🤝 VS traditional conventional medicine. Conventional medicine is GREAT at working with injuries, surgeries, etc. But has a horrible track record with chronic degenerative diseases that are caused by nutrition and lifestyle factors.

💡 Dr. Step came up with a great acronym to help us self-assess our health, and therefore, figure out where to optimize:

• S – sleep and stress.
• E – Elimination habits and hydration.
• X – Exercise, how much, what’s ideal. Mindfulness based physical activity
