Sad to contemplate the passing of Jim and Margaret Williams, well respected Southern Nevada educators. Remembering their contributions to the Henderson School District, The Las Vegas Union School District and the Clark County School District help to tell the history of education in Southern Nevada.
Here is a link to their obituary and information about the service tomorrow, Saturday, April 13, 2024, 1:00 P. M. at Christ Church Episcopal, 2000 S. Maryland Parkway, Las Vegas Nevada.

The ccsd archives.org and the Henderson Historical SocietyNV.org will help the historic Westside School celebrate its 100th birthday. Attached is a picture of our float. Our representatives will attend the festivities after the parade and answer questions about how we can help teachers, students and history buffs use our resources for education projects and family histories. We will be wearing lanyards. Feel free to strike up a conversation.

Hope you're coming (9-30-2023) to the Celebration of the West Side School's 100th Birthday! The CCSD Archive Committee is looking forward to it. We have a float and things to display. Kay Carl and Rick Watson will be there to support the old school's alumni and especially Brenda Williams who has devoted much in being "True to Her School". Here are details:
The event will be held on Saturday, September 30, 2023, beginning with a parade that will start at 10:00 a.m. with high energy and an abundance of fanfare to match the importance of the occasion. A festival will immediately follow at the Westside School campus (320 W. Washington Avenue). There is no fee for your parade entry, and each entry will receive a plaque expressing our gratitude and capturing your participation in this historic event.
The parade will begin at H Street south of Owens, traveling south on H to Jackson Avenue. The parade will head east on Jackson Avenue to D Street, then head south on D Street directly towards the school’s festival celebration.

Have a look at the original Dedication Plaque installed when Fremont began as as an Elementary (k-8) School in 1955. Notice that there is no mention of the Clark County School District. Most of the schools in Las Vegas were at that time members of the Las Vegas Union School District. What's the story there? See if you can find a 1950s era Las Vegas street map and notice that Fremont School was on the edge of much unsettled land stretching to the South of town in 1955. Was Sahara actually called Sahara or was it known by some other name in 1955? Read the names on the plaque out loud and see if they sound familiar. Google them and see if they were famous in their day.

Stopped by the new Fremont Middle School at 1100 E. St. Louis. See a few of the many pictures taken of the old school before it was demolished so as to remember the great student art that adorned its walls. See a few sad shots of the demolition and of its early renewal.

The Archive Committee has changed offices. In the spring of 2023 we moved to the CCSD offices on Flamingo Rd. Here is a picture of our new offices. Old timers will recognize this facility as the The Public Education Foundation’s offices back in the day. The Archive is gathering photos and interviews to tell the history of our new HQs. Stay tuned. It’s an interesting story.

Trying to share this story with the Henderson Historical Society page.
Took my truck in for an oil change in April. The service agent had his kindergarten son on the job with him. It was "Bring Your Child to Work Day". I asked the handsome little fellow where he went to school? Gordon McCaw Elementary was his reply. Here is an article about Mr. McCaw that appeared in the RJ: Anthem View a while back. It tells a good story about McCaw, a fine teacher and civic leader who helped put the City of Henderson on the map in the 1940s/50s. He happened to be my elementary school principal in 1946 to 1949.

Remembering a colleague, a fine teacher and school administrator, and a local historian who was generous with her time. Linda J. Simpson's 2012 Article in the RJ's Special to the View is a good read and a nice way to remember Julie Newberry

Reminiscing about Carver Park and enjoying family photos, taken with an old Kodak box camera ca 1947. Toni Watson Tibbets, left and her baby brother, Kit pictured with Lake Mead Drive and the River Mts. in the background. We lived at 16 B Lincoln Street not far from where the Elks Clubs stands today. The Carver Park School was just a few hundred yards north of the sturdy closeline supports in the photo.
