During their final lab immersion in Term 6, every student earns Mental Health First Aid training! ๐Ÿง ๐Ÿ’™

From recognizing the signs of a mental health crisis to confidently responding in any practice setting, this training gives our future OTs practical skills they'll use throughout their careers. As a bonus, students also learn self-care strategies to help them thrive in the profession.

๐Ÿ“š Our Class of 2027 had an opportunity to hear from our special guest speaker, Dr. Michael Iwama, the creator of the KAWA Model.

For our OT 8730 Level I FWC course, we started the term framing psychosocial and community-based practice within the context of Dr. Iwama's KAWA Model, including his newest updates, encouraging students to understand the social and environmental dynamics that shape a person's life, to promote trauma-informed practices, and to better foster culturally safe care.

Dr. Iwama was so generous with his time and even stayed after class to answer additional student questions!

Learning beyond the classroom. ๐Ÿ’™

Our Assistive & Complex Rehab Technology Lab Immersion challenged students to bridge evidence-based OT practice with real-world application. From evaluating occupational performance and matching clients with assistive technology solutions to designing, fitting, and training in devices that support participation and independence, every experience reinforced the power of client-centered care.

Students also explored community mobility through a tour of the Regional Transportation Commission (RTC) of Southern Nevada and completed a CarFit Technician assessment, gaining valuable insight into transportation accessibility and driving safety.

Hands-on experiences like these prepare our future occupational therapists to create meaningful solutions that enhance participation in everyday life. โœจ

Last week, we celebrated Match Day as our students learned their Level II Fieldwork placements and took another important step towards becoming OT practitioners.

As they transition from the classroom to clinical practice, weโ€™re excited to see them apply the knowledge, skills, and passion they have developed throughout their didactic year in real-world settings.
