This library desk was designed for parents who cannot simply leave their toddlers at home.
At Fairfield Area Library in Henrico County, Virginia, four unusual computer stations allow caregivers to work online while keeping an infant or young toddler safely within arm’s reach.
Each station combines a standard computer desk with an attached, enclosed play area featuring child-friendly activity panels and a low mirror. A parent can complete schoolwork, submit a job application or access online services without repeatedly turning away to check on their child.
The concept was developed by library staff with the building’s design team before the new Fairfield library opened in 2019. It addressed a problem staff had observed for years: caregivers struggling to use public computers while holding or supervising small children.
A photo of the stations went viral in January 2022, introducing the idea to people around the world. The project later received a National Association of Counties Achievement Award and additional recognition for innovation in local government.
It is a small design change, but one that makes knowledge and opportunity more accessible to parents.
Sometimes innovation isn’t about making technology more advanced. It’s about designing everyday spaces around the people who actually use them.
