This is one of my favorite conferences every year. And I’m so grateful to continue to be able to contribute.

This years was awesome with a multistate planning committee.

Lots of amazing afterschool professionals eager to engage.

Next year I hope we can be in person but regardless we will continue to 🤗

This was another challenging year! Hats off to all afterschool educators. You were often the glue keeping it together with so many unique scheduling needs due to the pandemic.

Our children needed you and you showed up with heart ❤️

Start students early helping them to break down complex concepts it will help rewind brain from “I can’t get that” to “I need to look at it from a different way” and how many ever different ways it takes of that until the light bulb goes off.

Sometimes it just helps to hear “you’re not alone” And you’re certainly not -Kam

Staffing is always at the forefront of our minds when rolling out a successful program.

For me Ive been fortunate enough to have a few really solid team members that ran exceptional programs and delivered quality care 😊and I have had the exact opposite. 😫

Afterschool has always had unique challenges with staffing because of the hours and it’s just something we have to keep at the forefront of our minds.

I shared one creative staffing option in the last video and here are a few more.

✅Consider short term
So go in knowing this person can only do this block or this month and outline it as such. Sometimes Interim people make an amazing impact.

✅Tap an expert or emerging expert
Yes we always tap the staff on site - but do you tap the music majors, acting majors- education majors - etc that could come in and be somewhat of a focused expert. Yes they may have to run other aspects but when you let someone lead with their passion it shifts the staffing. So be open to saying I’m hiring you as a____ expert (with other duties)

✅Title wisely ( To some it may not matter but to most it does. When I couldn’t pay in wages I made up for in titles and allowing them to gain experience across different areas-and had way more buy-in. Be flexible on your titles and ask your teams what else they’d like to get. Don’t box them in and miss out.
