Le Laumei Ma Le Malie - The Turtle and The Shark, 2025
Underglaze pencil on ceramic tiles strung with jute twine
"This piece embodies the beauty and tradition of my Polynesian culture through the use of freehand pattern work and telling of a Samoan folktale: the turtle and the shark. On my tiles, I share the story of two lovers who are forbidden to be together but run away into the ocean and undergo transformation. The complexity of this never-ending love story is expressed and contrasted through the spacing of the animals, the surrounding patterns, and the individually crafted yet bound tiles. A flowing tribal motif links their paths, weaving through the space like water and symbolizing their eternal connection."
