A long time ago, in an entrepreneurial venture far far away when I used to own a website development firm, I did everything I could to bring all of our clients to one particular webhosting company.
I wasn’t a reseller, and I wasn’t making any money besides a modest one-time $50 referral fee, but my reasons were sound. This was an amazing hosting company with customer service that would blow your mind with its supreme awesomeness.
Then, something happened.

An Awful Webhosting Company
I can only imagine the reasons why. So I did, in this post.

I encountered someone who was using ineffective language about the members of their group.
In working to segment their audience based on likelihood they would buy,
They Referred To Their Group Members As “Freeloaders.” Ouch!
I saw where this person was coming from.
Some people in the group would talk and talk and talk, but hadn’t shown up in the shopping cart as having bought products or joined the mastermind program.
In the meantime, they were getting all the educational benefits of being in the group for free.
Fair enough.
Nature of the beast.
Such is life.
That Doesn’t Make Them Freeloaders, Though. It’s Time To Call Them Something Else!
So what do you call them? Keep reading >>>

Full credit for this concept goes to my friend Skip Weisman, acclaimed public speaker and founder of Your Championship Company, who was our guest on a fantastic episode of the Business Creators’ Radio Show.
In many of his webinars and presentations, Skip recommends that if you have an employee or team member who’s looking to leave or work elsewhere, rather than call them on the carpet or even fire them for disloyalty, you offer to help them find a new job.

Funny thing, they may refuse your help - and stay with you.

This E-Mail Backfired, Big Time.
A client sent an e-mail without first checking to see if the green dot on my Skype was lit and typing “Got a sec?” like my consulting clients are entitled to do, and running this by me before sending that e-mail. I wish they would have.
(This is one of the reasons I say, “The moment you’re feeling really angry, that’s your mind and body letting you know this is the moment you REALLY need to calm down.”)

NEVER Ask Them To Commit (Or Worse, Recommit) To Doing Great Work
That's not where the value is.

Some time ago, I was listening to an entrepreneurial podcast where this advice was given:
“If you’re giving your virtual assistant a lot of work, they should be giving you a discount. Say this to them: ‘Look, I’m responsible for about 40% of your volume. I’m asking you to adjust your fees downward, since I’m bringing you so much of your income. Also, I want to make sure you understand, I always come first, before your other clients, for the same reason.’ They owe you this courtesy.”
Huh?!?!

During and after my time in MBA school, I served for three years on the Board of Directors of a local professional organization.
Then, I went full-bore into entrepreneurship, having become a “marketing guy” which was different than what this organization was about, and was planning to retire from the Board.

Running Effective Meetings, Part 2 of 2
Big win: stopping meetings from running overtime.

...he was teaching me three incredibly important lessons that have served me well as an entrepreneur, as well as helped my clients unearth the groundhogs and get much more done in less time while making their teams so much more eager to render exceptional service to customers:
1. When you call people to a meeting, you are asking for permission to take up their time. They grant it by showing up and playing full-tilt once they arrive.
2. People in the meeting know exactly how much time they’ve granted you – the moment you take up more time, you’re intruding into their time. It’s impolite and disrespectful. At Minute 61 of a one-hour meeting, your voice fades to a babble and all they hear is the ticking of their watch.
3. Once you disrespect someone by disregarding their time, they’ll gleefully shoot the messenger and discount the value of the message.

There are two big ways to ensure deadlines get met, which we don’t see discussed even one-tenth as much as they should be.
I’ll show you these from the perspective of the person(s) doing the work, to help leaders, managers, and entrepreneurs understand the impact on employees and team members.
