The UNLV Chemistry Club, we are a student affiliation of the Southern Nevada section of the American Chemical Society.

We delve into chemical education outreach, environmental clean-up, helping those in need, and American chemical Society events. We are an American Chemical Society student affiliate chapter here at UNLV. We offer our members the opportunity to get involved with scientific educational outreach and a variety of other community service based projects. We also do environmental work, and attend ACS national meetings each year.

Hello Everybody,

I would like to ask if there will be members who would like to go to the Discovery Children's Museum to volunteer for NanoDays. We would be doing a tour run on March 29th at 10:30 am and doing the actual event on April 5th from 9:00 am until 4:00 pm. We would basically be running booths for teaching students about nanoscience and nanotechnology. Lunch will be provided on the 5th. This would count as an Educational event towards the VIM program.

If you can and want to do this event, please get back to me at [email protected] as soon as possible.

I'm sorry for the late notice, but there is a presentation being held today on the challenges and opportunities for performance and reliability of thin film photovoltaic devices presented by Br. Shubhra Bansal from the U.S. Department of Energy. It is today (February 26th) at 2:30 pm on the campus of UNLV in the Science and Engineering Building (SEB) in room 2251. It will be about an hour long.

If anyone is interested in attending, this will fall under the Environmental requirement towards the VIM program.

The tournament director for the Nevada State Science Olympiad Competition is looking for judges to run the events at the State Competition on Saturday, March 8th at Rancho High School. She is looking for people with knowledge in Anatomy and Physiology, Genetics and Heredity, Astronomy and Solar System, as well as Forensics and Crime Scene Investigation.

The judge needs to make a test on the material to be administered on the day of the competition. The testing window is 1 hour for each event. Once the testing window is closed, the judge will need to score the test and turn in the final team placement. The total commitment is the time it will take to write the test and the 2-3 hours to administer and grade the test on Saturday, March 8th. Each event has a rule sheet that gives the parameters for the event. This allows the student competing to study in advance of the competition.

If you are interested, contact me at [email protected] with your name, major, phone number, and e-mail address so I can pass it along to the director.

This will count for either an ACS credit or an Educational credit towards VIM membership, which ever one you don't have by the end of the semester.

Hello Chemical Interactions, Alan here. I hope your winter vacation was wonderful and you enjoyed yourselves. As it comes to a close, I hope everyone is getting ready for a great semester.

As many of you may know, Chemical Interactions sells Lab Coats and Lab Goggles at the beginning of each semester for fund-raising. We ask members to help out in this process, since it tends to be a high volume process at times. We mainly need people to sell lab coats on Monday from 1:00am to noon and from 2:00pm to 3:00pm Tuesdays from 8:00 to 9:00 am, 11:00am to noon, and 3:30pm to 4:30pm, Wednesday from 11:00am to noon and from 2:00pm to 3:00pm, and Thursday from 3:30pm to 4:30pm. This is for the first two weeks of the semester, and since Monday the 20th is MLK Day, next Monday isn't required. Other time frames could use volunteers, but these are the highest anticipated customer volumes.

Please e-mail us at [email protected] if you can volunteer your time to lab coat sales and let us know when you are available. Thank you for your time.

-Alan Eister, President.
