We are wired for connection. Studies on social isolation over the past 10 years have concluded that people without adequate social interaction were twice as likely to die prematurely. When we move or relocate with our kids, it is important not only to get them engaged in their school and community, it is equally important that we do the same. One of the goals of the Moving Families Initiative is to get and keep kids involved in extracurricular activities of their choice. What about “extracurricular activities” for adults? Sites like Facebook, Meet Up, or Nextdoor can help adults connect in their community. Visiting your local community center or volunteering for non-profit organizations can connect you with a group of like-minded individuals that can reduce loneliness and boost your immune system. Your health depends on it!

On Tuesday, June 20, 2017, Moving Families Initiative® kicked off its inaugural National Get Involved With an Extracurricular Activity Organization Day, an annual event that focuses on education and awareness of the critical role extracurricular activity organizations play in the lives of children and their families. This campaign aligns with the MFI goal to reduce the stress for parents who are moving or relocating with children and assist these children with the physical and emotional challenges they face when changing neighborhoods, schools and friends.
Extracurricular activity organizations provide programs that build and strengthen values, character traits and life skills. In addition to education and awareness, the National Get Involved With an Extracurricular Activity Organization Day focused on connecting parents, children and communities with the extracurricular activity organization of their choice. As part of this national celebration, MFI encouraged parents to take action by:
• working with their children to get them involved in an extracurricular activity of their choice; and
• getting involved themselves by volunteering, donating or connecting someone in their personal or professional network to an extracurricular organization of their choice.
Johnnie Johnson, former NFL All Pro Los Angeles Ram and CEO of World Class Coaches highlights the importance of getting involved, “Children’s participation in extracurricular activities not only strengthens character but also allows for a safe environment where they can make new friends in a new location.”
Beginning in June of 2018, National Get Involved With an Extracurricular Activity Organization Day will be celebrated during the entire month of June each year.
