New federal student loan rules spark debate over “professional degrees”
Under the new limits, graduate students can borrow up to $20,500 per year, while students in programs classified as “professional degrees” can borrow up to $50,000 per year in federal student loans.

The discussion has gained attention in healthcare, where programs such as nursing, physician assistant studies, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and audiology are part of the conversation.
One important distinction: “professional degree” is a federal student loan classification. It does not determine whether someone is a professional in their field.

NCC’s current programs are not directly affected by this graduate-level classification, but the issue may matter to students who plan to pursue advanced healthcare education.

We had the pleasure of meeting one of our newest students, Asia Hall, who is starting her journey in our Medical Assistant & Phlebotomy Technician Dual Program! We also met her biggest supporter, her grandmother, Florence, a former Surgical Technician, who was there to cheer her on as she starts this exciting new chapter.
