Happy Latina/o/x & Hispanic Heritage Month!..
Today, the Latino population in the United States is over 60 million and makes up 18.9% of the total population. It is the largest racial or ethnic group in the United States. Latinos continue to help fuel our economy and enrich our nation as entrepreneurs, athletes, artists, entertainers, scientists, public servants, and much more. IGES celebrates and recognizes the histories, cultures, and contributions of Hispanics and Latinas/os/x people in the United States...

IGES is excited to showcase the Work, Power and Energy: Women in Engineering (WPE) podcast created by students in Dr. Valerie Taylor’s WMST 113 Race, Class and Gender Summer 2026! The class created a three-episode podcast where they interviewed women engineers such as UNLV Professor Dr. Sarah Harris and UNLV alumni Katie Whalon. WPE explores how race, class, and gender affect women in engineering careers and their daily lives. All students are STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) majors and most were part of the Las Vegas Scholars Program as well as entering freshmen for the College of Engineering.

See bio above or Linktree for link to listen!

Save the Date: Chris Willoughby, Ph.D, Assistant Professor of African American and African Diaspora Studies at UNLV will be giving a University Forum Lecture on Thursday, September 24th. The talk is free and open to the public and will take place from 7pm-8:30pm in RLL 101 on the UNLV campus.

“Motley Crews and Medical Men: Fighting Co**se Theft in the American Revolution and Early Republic”

In 1765, a multi-racial “sailors mob” attacked the home of Philadelphia Medical Professor William Shippen, Jr. Rocks shattered his windows, and a bullet tore through his fleeing carriage. While this attack coincided with the passage of the Stamp Act that sparked the American Revolution (which marks its 250th anniversary this year), this motley crew had another agenda. They hoped to reclaim a co**se stolen by physicians from a local graveyard, the first of many such uprisings.

Spanning from the Revolution to the Civil War, this lecture examines how the concentration of disenfranchised people on plantations and urban slums shaped the practice of dissection and anatomical study in medical schools. In contrast to studies emphasizing the evolution of medicine and anatomy, this lecture elucidates the structures that made people vulnerable to body snatchers and the rowdy activism that the enslaved and common poor took to preserve their graveyards and dignity.

Save the Date: Dr. Lynn Comella, Professor of Gender and S*xuality Studies, will be giving a University Forum Lecture on Thursday, September 10th. The talk is free and open to the public and will take place from 7pm-8:30pm in RLL 101 on the UNLV campus.

"S*x, Censorship, and the New Higher Education Cultures Wars"

Drawing on more than 40 in-depth interviews with sexuality scholars at universities and colleges across the United States, this talk examines how professors navigate the politics of campus free speech and academic freedom in an increasingly polarized time. What specific challenges and forms of institutional gatekeeping do they face and how are they responding?

This research offers critical insights into understanding how professors who teach difficult or potentially controversial material navigate their institutional contexts at a time when higher education is increasingly under attack and new forms of censorship are being codified into official policy.
