Last week’s post on JSR and MCR troubleshooting sparked a lot of discussion — especially around rungs that look true but refuse to energize.
A few people asked for a visual breakdown, so we put together a short video that walks through the three instructions most often responsible for “illogical” PLC behavior: OTU, JSR, and MCR.
If you’ve ever chased a rung that should energize but doesn’t, this will look familiar.
🔧 OTU (Unlatch) — hidden unlatches in other routines overriding what you see
🔧 JSR (Jump to Subroutine) — logic not executing because the routine isn’t being scanned
🔧 MCR (Master Control Reset) — rungs evaluating false inside a control zone even when inputs appear true
If your team works with RSLogix or Studio 5000, this is a quick visual refresher worth sharing.

What’s the difference between using a JSR (Jump to Subroutine) and an MCR (Master Control Reset) when you want to turn a block of logic ON or OFF?
A JSR completely redirects program flow. If you don’t call the subroutine, none of the logic inside it executes — simple, clean, and great for modular design.
An MCR, on the other hand, executes the logic but forces all rungs to be false inside the MCR zone. It’s essentially placing an AFI (Always False Input) at the beginning of each rung in that zone. Seal‑in circuits will open, OTE outputs will go false even if rung conditions are true, a latched bit (OTL) will stay latched, a timer’s output will reset to zero, and an RTO (Retentive Timer) will retain its accumulated value from the moment the MCR instruction went false.
In short:
JSR = skip the entire routine
MCR = run the routine, but AFI every rung inside the MCR zone
Understanding the difference between these two and how they work is essential to PLC troubleshooting. We fixed a technical issue in Fault 4 of Skill Test Mode — and added a big user experience improvement.

Control Panel Design TIP:
Extend the PLC communication port outside the panel and include a power outlet for the technician's laptop. But place both in a locked enclosure so only authorized personnel may access.
