🌍 Flat Map vs. Globe: Who Wins? 🚢

Today our students at Nevada School of Inquiry played ship captains to investigate a big question: Is the Earth flat? 🤔

⛵ Test 1: The Flat Map. Students sailed a tiny ship across a flat map and watched from sea level. The ship just got smaller and smaller, but never disappeared.

🌐 Test 2: The Globe. Then they sailed the same ship across a globe. As it moved away, the hull dropped out of view first, then the sail, just like real ships disappearing over the horizon!

💡 The big discovery: Only the globe matched what real sailors see. Ships vanish bottom first because the Earth curves. 🚢➡️🌎

Our scientists gathered evidence, made observations, and let the data do the talking. That's inquiry in action! 🔍

We are proud to announce our very first Student Lighthouse team. These 6 middle schoolers are going to help take leadership and the 7 Habits to the next level at NVSI.

We're proud to announce the Nevada School of Inquiry Student Lighthouse Team, a group of student leaders who help guide our school community.

What the Lighthouse Team does:

We love when our former students in high school come visit us at NVSI. It provides a space and an opportunity for the high schoolers to share their personal experience and our middle schoolers have an opportunity to ask them ALL the burning questions.

We help our 8th graders apply, audition, and find the next learning experience that’s right for them. This is part of our personalized experience.

Teaching Tip Tuesday. Provide your students with options and opportunities. Since it is so hot outside, we moved PE inside and provided two options-they picked their destiny. One day at lunch a few students had an idea, “What if we had a PE battle?”. We listened and helped bring that idea to life in an epic battle between the two PE classes. It took two minutes away from class, but it left us all laughing with happy tears when it was done.

Two nights, fresh mountain air, memories, laughter, hiking, and so much more!

Our favorite way to start our year is spending the weekend together, roughing it in the mountains. This experience with our families strengthens our bond and builds community. Not only does it stretch people outside of their comfort zone, it builds trust relying on one another in nature.
