The Cultura Project members have been working on a series of projects using a variety of materials that can be found at home. Last week they learned about a variety of different historical and cultural masks, the materials they are made from, the significance of their designs, and their purposes. This week, we’ll be showcasing some terrific and very creative masks they’ve made using newspaper and paper mache!✂️👺🤡💀
Made by: Kayla W.
Mask from: Fiesta De Santa María Magdalena, DANZA DE LOS PAYASOS: Xico, Veracruz
About: In Veracruz, México, the term "clown" referred to the dancers who danced "separated”, that is to say, they had no relation to the story that the dance told. With the passage of time, little participation of these characters began to be noticed, so it was decided to create a specific dance to motivate young people to participate and not lose this character. The attire they wear are made up of a colorful suit, a clown mask, and a party hat. Regarding the steps of the dance, these depend on the son that is being interpreted, generally the son of La Novia and La Paseada are used. The steps are free and each one dances according to the rhythm.

Mrs. Villalobos has been a Folklórico teacher for a few years now and came to notice that there are a lot of students who want to get involved with their culture and are limited to do so, hence the creation of THE CULTURA PROJECT. This is an organization open for all students attending Sunrise Mountain HS. The Cultura Project strives to raise cultural awareness and appreciation for the richness and beauty of Latin America. PROMOTE & PRESERVE NUESTRA CULTURA! ♥️💪🏽
