Juvenile detention facilities may leave many juveniles with mental health issues due to overcrowding, lack of available resources, and separation from support systems.

The National Mental Health Association reported that between 30 and 50 percent of juveniles affected have mental health issues. Anxiety disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder are two of the most common.

A recent study found that students that have been suspended from school, even just once, are much more likely to have contact with the juvenile justice system. Every suspension increases the likelihood by 7%.
