Great thoughts from Leslie Fox Priest.

Martin Guy Johnson, “Marty”, passed away November 25, 2023, in Hood River, Oregon. He was surrounded by family and friends.
He was born in Valdosta, Georgia June 4, 1952, to parents Glenn Johnson and Virginia Riley. He joined siblings Gail and Brandon. As a family they travelled the US and the world for Glenn’s career as a US Air Force fighter pilot. They went from Georgia, Florida, Vermont, Germany, Arizona, and Nevada. In his youth the family travelled throughout Europe.
As an adult Marty followed his love of skiing and being in the mountains, living in Nevada, Utah, and Montana. He soon made his home in Parkdale, Oregon where he and his first wife, Kathy, started Caribou Woolens. A very successful ski hat business.
He met the love of his life, Polly (Polly Phillips-Johnson) in 1983 while working at Mt. Hood Meadows. They bought their first home in 2001 and were married in 2002. They spent 25 years together living life to its fullest and loving each other every day.
As a Ski Industry Professional, Marty would work as a Ski Patroller, Lifts Operations Manager, Lift Maintenace, and Snowcat Operator. He also helped build ski lifts at Whitefish (Big) Mt. and Mt. Hood Meadows. Marty worked at MHM from 1979 to 1989. After a short time away, Marty returned to MHM until 2000.
Marty supervised and mentored 100’s of employees. They respected him as a boss and remembered his kind demeanor many years later. He touched people positively and made friends with almost anyone. He was a man who valued you and your friendship. He had many lifelong friends.
After leaving the Ski Industry he started a new career as a house painter. His meticulous nature suited this business well. So well, he eventually was able to start his own painting business.
After his retirement in 2012, he and Polly bought a conversion van and explored the US coast to coast. Eventually the van was replaced with a comfy RV. There are so many memories from all the places they travelled to.
He was an avid mountain biker and a member of the Live Wire Riders. He helped organize the Columbia Gorge Challenge bike race for many years. He enjoyed reading, fly fishing, golfing, and was a beautiful skier. He loved being a homebody and doing home improvements; especially if Polly asked him to do a project. He would design it, build it, finish it and get ready for the next project. He was a skillful and poignant writer, sharing his memories of people and places.
He spent over 25 years battling Parkinson’s Disease. His strength and dignity was admired by his family and friends. We are all relieved that his suffering is over.
Marty is survived by his wife Polly, siblings Linda and Brandy (Lori), children Travis (Hillary), Toby (Luke), Woody (Taylor), grandchildren Lincoln, Jackson, Turner, Jaime and his dog Ranger.
He was predeceased by his mother Virginia, father Glenn, sister Gail and his dogs Dox, Zeke, Zack, and Jack.
Marty requested no memorial service but rather a celebration of his life. That will take place at the Johnson home June 22, 2024. If you wish, please honor Marty by donating to the Michael J. Fox Foundation For Parkinson’s Research.
Peace and Love to you Marty

Toby Tanner is feeling heartbroken with Polly Phillips-Johnson and Marty Johnson.

With the heaviest of hearts we wanted to share that our beloved Marty Johnson has passed away on November 25th surrounded by family and friends. My mom and Marty spent a beautiful 25 years together with more love, respect, and adventure that most people wish for in this lifetime. She is absolutely heartbroken but is comforted knowing that Marty is now free of the horrible horrible disease that is Parkinson’s. Please know that she is leaning into her family, friends, and three beautiful grandsons for love and support. So many of you have asked what you can do for our family and my mom during this time. Marty was passionate about finding out a cure for Parkinson’s and admired Michael J Fox’s fight in doing so. From now until Tuesday, November 28th, every dollar you donate will be matched. Please follow the link and consider making a donation of any kind in honor of Marty.
As Marty would say, peace and love.☮️❤️

Hello again to the Clark High Class of 1970!!

At long last we’re happy to say that we have chosen a new date for our long-delayed reunion! Come back to Las Vegas and see how we’ve changed! Our new date is Saturday November 12th and we will have the event at the Speakeasy in the basement of the Mob Museum in downtown Las Vegas. A fair amount of the museum is given over to events that took place while we were growing up in the 60s and we think it will be a fun place to have our reunion. For those of you who haven’t been to the museum, here is a link:
https://themobmuseum.org

The reunion will run from 7-10PM and attendees who come early can spend from 6-7PM touring the museum as part of the event. The parking fee will also be part of the admission. The price will be $100 per person, including food, two drink tickets, parking, and museum admission. Also, since prices have gone up considerably while we’ve held off the reunion, we would certainly appreciate any donations you might consider offering – Thanks!

Don’t wait, as admission is capped at 120. Once that number is reached, we have to shut down registration, and we can’t sell tickets at the door! Get your place held by sending your check or money order to:

Clark High Class of 1970

If you have any questions, just send us an email at [email protected]

Hope to see you her in November!!

Hello to the Clark High Class of 1970!!

Your reunion committee has been watching the progression of the pandemic While we really hoped we could put on a reunion worthy of the class next March, at this time we are not comfortable planning and getting committed to a date when we aren’t sure it will be comfortable for classmates to travel or to gather.

There are lots of voices on the committee, covering all sides of the pandemic spectrum, from those who believe it is a hoax to those who won’t gather with strangers even if everyone is vaccinated, so believe us when we tell you that there has been lively discussion. The committee has also heard from lots of you, and again the comments are all over the landscape. That being said, it is agreed by all that if we try to have a gathering in uncertain times that the attendance is likely to be quite low.

For those of you who have paid for your tickets, or kindly donated funds to cover costs, we will be refunding your money within the next two weeks. We feel it’s not fair to hold your funds for such an indefinite period.

Our plan going forward is to monitor the situation and meet again after the first of the year, to try to determine a safe gathering time. Maybe we’ll have a 55th reunion instead of a 50th!

In the meantime, the committee would like to hear from you. What will it take for you feel comfortable gathering in a large group in an indoor setting? Since we are able to start from scratch, we’d love to hear your ideas for what you would like to see in a reunion, and how much you would be willing to pay to attend. Just post on our page on Facebook or send us an email at [email protected].

Thanks very much for hanging in there with us and remember to stay safe!!

Hello Class of ’70 Alumni!

😎😎So now we’re a year into this pandemic and your reunion committee is hard at work being hard at work! Events are still wreaking havoc on our plans to host our 50th reunion. We wonder how, in 50 years, the Class of 2020 will remember how it affected their last year of high school. Your reunion committee has voted to continue monitoring the situation for the next few months. There’s just too much uncertainty out there and while things are much better, there’s still a lot of questions about gatherings, masks, social distancing and so forth.

At any rate, we still don’t have a reunion date, but we’re still hopeful. We will meet again in a few months and take another look at the situation. Perhaps we will be able to set something up late this year or in the Spring of 2022. It will be our 50 + 2 reunion perhaps.

In the meantime, you’ll probably hear about a multi-year reunion for the classes of 70-75 being hosted in April of 2022. We aren’t part of the planning or organization for that but if you have friends or family in some of those classes you might find it a fun event. They are also raising funds for Clark as part of that gathering. However, if you get a message or read something on any page other than ours, then it is probably not officially a Class of 70 event.

As for us, we say hang in there and stay safe! Go Chargers!

Hello!!

What a year it's been, and of course it is sad that we didn't have the chance to get together this year. Murphy's Law is always in force!

However, 2021 starts in just a few hours and the Reunion Committee will be working on ways to set up a reunion in the fall of 2021. Maybe with the Class of 71 or maybe on our own, who knows?

What should we call it -- 50 + 1? Does anyone have any other ideas?

At any rate, wherever you are, and whomever you are with, please accept this wish for a Very Healthy and Happy 2021!!

Hello to the Clark High Class of 1970:

Even though we won’t be getting together this fall, there is no reason that you can’t reconnect with your classmates you haven’t seen in forever.

The reunion committee has “located” nearly 400 members of our class. Is there anyone with whom you’d like to connect or see again? The committee would like to help. We’ve agreed not to release any contact information without your approval, but if you want to tell us who you’d like to contact, we’ll send them your information along with a note asking them to contact you.

How does that sound? Just send us an email at:

Hello to the Clark High Class of 1970,

After a great deal of consideration and discussion, your reunion committee has made the difficult decision to postpone the reunion until such time as large gatherings can be safely held without substantial risk to each other, probably sometime next year. While this saddens us, it really boils down to the fact that a reunion with facemasks and social distancing wouldn’t be much fun anyway!

That being said, this is by no means a cancellation. The committee will continue to monitor progress towards a vaccine and some sense of control and look to reschedule sometime in 2021. Maybe we’ll end up joining the class of 71, who knows?

For those of you who have paid for your registration fees or been kind enough to give us a donation, we are giving you an option to have your registrations and/or donations refunded or held, whichever you prefer. If you wish a refund, we’ll have a check to you early in August.

Again, we’re sorry that outside events have turned our plans upside down. We will stay in touch and let you know more when we know more. Best wishes, and stay safe – Go Chargers!!
