The Sam Steel Society is honored to spotlight Councilor Russell Walter, a newly elected member of the council who will be delivering remarks at this year’s Sam Steel Legacy Celebration.

A proud fifth-generation agriculturist from Animas, New Mexico, Russell represents a long lineage of NMSU Aggies. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Agricultural and Extension Education in 2009 and a Master of Public Administration in 2012 from NMSU. His commitment to the university continues today as he pursues a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership Administration, expected in 2027.

Russell’s professional career is a testament to his dedication to agricultural education and leadership. Since 2021, he has served as the Executive Secretary of the New Mexico FFA Association, where he mentors student officers and manages statewide programming. His extensive background also includes serving as an Agriculture Educator at Cliff High School, State Director for the Alaska FFA Association, and Program Director for the New Mexico Agricultural Leadership Program.

Throughout his journey, Russell has been recognized with numerous honors, including the NMSU College of Agriculture Dean’s Award of Excellence and the American FFA Degree. His unique perspective is deeply rooted in his rural upbringing and his roles as a husband, father, and educator, grounding his values in integrity and service.

“Growing up surrounded by wide-open spaces, I developed a deep appreciation for tradition, family, and the resilience of rural living. My commitment to agricultural education is driven by a desire to ensure equitable, high-quality opportunities for rural students, reflecting the community that shaped me. I am humbled to contribute to the Sam Steel Council by fostering growth and preparing the next generation of agricultural leaders.”
