Don’t know what to look for when choosing a turfgrass species? Choosing a species based on the intended function (in regards to appearance and wear and tear) is just as important as choosing based on stated water use, or even more so.

The performance of the turfgrass depends on environmental conditions and the quality of the irrigation system more than the species of grass, but there are some species that perform better in different regions. In Southern New Mexico, Kentucky bluegrass, perennial ryegrass, and bermudagrass perform well.

The quality of the water is very important in an aquaponic system. Some parameters to monitor include: Dissolved oxygen (DO), TAN, pH, water hardness, and alkalinity. TAN is the ratio of toxic to non-toxic ammonia.

These water quality parameters should be monitored closely and be maintained at certain levels for the best performance of the system.

There are two ways to first establish an aquaponics system: with fish and without fish. Starting without fish is faster and will avoid the risk of killing the fish with ammonia poisoning in the beginning. During establishment, levels of TAN, nitrite, and nitrate will fluctuate as the colony of nitrifying bacteria grows.

Nitrogen is an essential nutrient for plants and is a common ingredient in fertilizers. Nitrate is a form of nitrogen that could pose a health risk to humans and livestock if levels get well above natural levels. Water high in nitrate is safe to use for tasks other than drinking such as bathing and washing dishes.

Human infants younger than 6 months and pregnant or nursing women are the most vulnerable. Infants should never be fed formula mixed with water contaminated with nitrate or they might develop “blue baby syndrome”.

Nitrate is hard to remove from water and can only be detected through chemical testing. Municipalities test for nitrate to ensure water is safe for consumption. Owners of rural or private wells should test themselves. The New Mexico Environment Department has two programs that offer free testing of private domestic wells. Wells should be placed as far away as possible from possible sources of contamination, such as agricultural runoff. Both new and existing wells need to be properly cased and protected from surface and subsurface drainage.
