Tomorrow, Oct. 20th, the NMSU Music Department is presenting its Fall Faculty Showcase at 7:30 pm. More than a dozen NMSU faculty members will perform on the Atkinson Hall stage.
The recital is free and open to the public.

The New Mexico Energy Conservation and Management Division (ECAM) has awarded $17.3 million in grants to four projects designed to harness and expand geothermal energy resources across the state, driving clean energy development and reducing energy costs for New Mexicans.

The Department of Geologic Sciences at New Mexico State University received $2.85 million from that fund for geologic and geophysical characterization of geothermal sources near Las Cruces. This project will allow the department to acquire a desktop scanning electron microscope to be used by NMSU geology students and faculty to conduct specific research in areas of the project. It also will cover the cost of a passive seismic survey of the area and inversion of aeromagnetic data.

The Sloan Digital Sky Survey’s recent 20th data release for the first time provides a time-lapse, detailed map of the universe from both hemispheres on Earth. It integrates full all-sky panoptic spectroscopy across both hemispheres, providing an unprecedented look at the stars, interstellar gas and distant galaxies of the cosmos.

New Mexico State University has played a critical role as one of the founding institutions and operates the SDSS telescope in southern New Mexico. For more than 26 years, SDSS has been providing a kind of free library of data about the universe for scientists and amateurs alike around the world. SDSS consortium collaborators are incredibly enthusiastic about the recent data release.

“We've entered a whole new dimension, literally, with these data, in that we're taking multiple spectra,” said Joe Burchett, NMSU assistant professor in the Department of Astronomy and commissioning scientist for SDSS-V. "This sets a standard for the surveys to come, as has been the case for every generation of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Each one sets a new benchmark."

This Friday, Oct. 16, at 7:30 p.m., the NMSU Concert Choir, Treble Singers and Chamber Singers will present "What is Human?" at Atkinson Recital Hall. The evening will be full of choral music exploring the human experience.
The event is public, and admission is free.

NMSU's Math Problem of the Week is getting some upgrades!
To tackle AI use and ensure fair play, the Department of Mathematical Sciences is introducing an in-person final round for qualifying students competing for the $500 prize. Plus, the contest is expanding to high schools in Las Cruces and El Paso, TX, to compete for a $6,000 math scholarship.

Did you know Young Achievers Forum will bring 200 to 250 sixth- and seventh-grade students from Gadsen Independent School District, Hatch Valley and Las Cruces Public Schools to New Mexico State University to give them an opportunity to experience college?
