Honoring Dr. Karen Trujillo’s Enduring Impact ✨ Dr. Karen M. Trujillo ’92, ’93, ’98 believed education could transform lives, and she dedicated her career to making that belief a reality.

A proud three-time graduate, educator, researcher and superintendent of Las Cruces Public Schools, Trujillo inspired generations of students and championed the teachers who shape the future. She also served as New Mexico’s secretary of education.

After her passing in 2021, her husband, Ben Trujillo, established the Dr. Karen M. Trujillo Memorial Foundation and created the Dr. Karen M. Trujillo Memorial Endowed Scholarship to support future educators in the NMSU College of Health, Education, and Social Transformation. Since then, seven aspiring teachers have received scholarship support through the fund. “This scholarship allows me to graduate without being in debt. To say ‘thank you’ is not enough,” one recipient shared. 💫

Over the past five years, the Trujillo Foundation has provided nearly $800,000 in endowed scholarships at NMSU and the six other universities that offer teacher education programs, extending Dr. Trujillo’s impact across the state. Every scholarship recipient reflects Dr. Trujillo’s enduring belief that education creates opportunity, strengthens communities and changes lives.

Longtime baseball coach Artie Green will be honored and inducted into the Knights of Honor, recognizing his years of dedication, leadership, mentorship, and countless contributions to the baseball community.

Coach Green’s influence extends far beyond the diamond. Through his commitment to the game and the young athletes he coached, he helped shape not only players, but people — leaving behind a legacy that will continue to inspire for years to come.

Leading the way through Mayfield High School’s 1968 Homecoming Parade, the AFJROTC Color Guard brought discipline, pride and school spirit to the streets of Las Cruces.

A new name calls for a celebration and this morning, Desert Bloom Elementary School celebrated its new chapter with plenty of superhero spirit!

Kids were blooming with excitement as students, families, teachers, staff, Principal Covarrubia, district leaders and the LCPS Board of Education gathered to celebrate their school’s new name: Desert Bloom Elementary School!

With the majestic Organ Mountains as its backdrop, Desert Bloom is a fitting name for a school where students are growing, learning and blooming every day.

The celebration was made even more special with visits from Wonder Woman, Batman and Tito the Coyotito!

LCPS Board of Education President Pamela Cort, a former French teacher, taught students how to say Desert Bloom in French, and students proudly chanted it together.

Superintendent Ignacio Ruiz encouraged students to always do their best, while Principal Covarrubia welcomed families and introduced student superheroes who represented the heroes they aspire to be in their school community.

Student superheroes then made a pledge to be kind, responsible and respectful, always try their best, and live by the Golden Rule: treat others the way you want to be treated.

Dear parents,

The Shelter in place has been lifted for all middle and high schools. All students and staff are safe.

As a result, some school buses may experience delays in departing campus and getting students home. Bus drivers and school staff are working to transport students home as safely as possible once conditions allow.

Shelter-in-Place Notification

Due to lightning detected within 10 miles of campus, middle and high schools have implemented a shelter-in-place to protect students, staff, and visitors. Students are safe and remaining indoors while we monitor weather conditions.

As a result, some school buses may experience delays in departing campus and getting students home. Bus drivers and school staff are working to transport students home as safely as possible once conditions allow.

We appreciate your patience and understanding. We will provide additional information as conditions change.

What to Expect:
• Students and staff will remain safely indoors until weather conditions improve.
• Parents and guardians may still pick up their child during a shelter-in-place. A valid driver's license or government issued photo ID is required for student release.
• Students who normally walk, bike, or ride the bus home will remain at school until it is safe to travel.
• Buses and student drivers will be allowed to leave once school administrators determine conditions are safe.
• Stay informed with live weather updates and lightning countdowns via the Weather tab on your child's school website.
The safety of our students and staff is our highest priority. We appreciate your patience and cooperation as we follow established safety procedures during hazardous weather.
