We are proud to spotlight Martha P. Chavez, recipient of the Charles and Willoughby Nason Scholarship for Spring 2025—and now a successfully defended Master’s candidate!
Having experienced being brought to the U.S. as a child and growing up in a border city, Martha brings both personal insight and academic rigor to her research. Her thesis in Sociology focuses on the lived experiences of the 1.5 generation—undocumented individuals who, like her, navigated life in the U.S. after arriving as children.
With support from the Nason Scholarship, Martha conducted in-depth qualitative research using pláticas and testimonios, capturing powerful narratives around legal status, national identity, and belonging. Her work not only advances scholarship—it amplifies voices too often left out of immigration discourse and policy.
Join us in celebrating Martha’s incredible achievement and her unwavering commitment to immigrant justice!
