Why don't we use computers to learn?

Because learning is about more than finding answers—it's about learning to think.

Technology is a wonderful tool when used appropriately. But we also believe there is tremendous value in reading physical books, writing by hand, solving problems without a screen, and engaging in face-to-face discussion.

These practices cultivate attention, memory, careful observation, and meaningful conversation— that can be difficult to develop in a world full of constant digital distractions.

Our goal isn't to avoid technology, but rather to help students master it rather than be mastered by it.

By giving students time, especially in their early years, to think deeply, listen carefully, and engage with the world around them, we're helping form lifelong learners who can use technology wisely and intentionally.

Why does reading great books matter?

Because some books never stop asking the right questions.
In classical education, students don't simply read books to pass a test. They read stories and ideas that have shaped people for generations.

As they encounter heroes and villains, courage and sacrifice, justice and mercy, they begin to wrestle with the same questions people have asked for centuries:

What is true?
What is good?
What is courage?
What is worth living for?

Great books invite students into conversations that stretch across time. They challenge them to think deeply, discuss respectfully, and grow in wisdom—not just knowledge.

We believe an education should do more than prepare students for a test or a career. It should prepare them for a life well lived.

So, we read great books.

Why We Memorize Poetry?

Why ask students to memorize poetry?
Because some words are worth carrying with us for a lifetime.
Poetry teaches students to slow down and notice beauty. It expands their vocabulary, sharpens their ear for language, and helps them develop confidence as they recite aloud.

But its greatest gift is something deeper.

When students memorize poems of courage, hope, gratitude, faith, and wonder, those words become part of who they are. Long after a test is forgotten, a well-loved poem remains—a source of comfort, wisdom, and perspective.

At High Point Classical Academy, we don't believe education is simply about filling minds with information. We believe it is about forming hearts and minds that recognize truth, goodness, and beauty.

Poetry has been shaping generations for centuries. We are grateful to pass that tradition on to our students,

Because beautiful words stay with us long after the lesson ends, that's why we memorize poetry.

# Why We Teach Latin

In a world that values speed, we choose a language that teaches students to slow down and think.

Latin isn't just about learning old words. It's about learning how language works.

As students translate each sentence, they practice careful observation, logical reasoning, and precision. They discover that words have meaning, grammar matters, and details aren't meant to be skipped.

Along the way, they build a stronger vocabulary, gain a deeper understanding of English, and unlock the roots of many scientific, medical, legal, and theological terms they'll encounter throughout their lives.

But perhaps most importantly, Latin teaches patience and perseverance.

It reminds students that some things are worth wrestling with—and that understanding comes through careful thought, not quick answers.

That's why we teach Latin.

Why We Read Original Documents

As we celebrate Independence Day, we're reminded that history is more than a collection of dates—it's the story of what shaped our nation.

That's one reason we believe students should encounter history through the words of those who lived it.

Rather than relying only on summaries, our students read, analyze , and even memorize original documents like the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and other primary sources.

Why?

Because original documents invite students to wrestle with ideas firsthand. They learn to ask thoughtful questions, examine context, and understand history through the voices of those who helped shape it.

Reading these works also helps students recognize the enduring principles that have influenced our nation and appreciate the responsibilities that accompany the freedoms we enjoy.

We don't read original documents simply because they're historic.

We read them because they help students become thoughtful readers, careful thinkers, and informed citizens.
