When the mind is brought before a difficult question, its true stature is disclosed. The stronger intellect does not surrender itself to agitation, nor permit confusion to assume the seat of judgment. It holds its poise, gathers the facts belonging to the matter, weighs them according to their proper value, and seeks the law by which the problem may be resolved.

The unformed mind, lacking this inward government, is mastered by the very riddle it was summoned to solve. It must receive its instruction in the simplest forms, as the child receives nourishment before it can digest stronger food. Carelessness of thought is therefore a mark of immaturity, while reflection is one of the first dignities of the awakened soul.

Let no earnest initiate be disheartened because the first lessons seem plain, the explanations incomplete, and the instruction narrow. These ancient forms have passed through many hands, and time has laid its dust upon them.

Some portions are worn, some are curtailed, some are burdened with poor interpretation; yet even in their imperfect state they retain the majesty of ruined columns. They are the entrance, the threshold, the triple support of the portico.

Beyond them rises the temple itself, whose sanctuary is reached by labor, fidelity, and inward discipline.

Masonry speaks by allegory, and allegory is the vesture in which grave truths are clothed for the instructed mind. Its ceremonies, its symbols, its ancient forms, are instruments by which morality is made visible and philosophy is brought down from abstraction into figure, measure, and action.

Stand before the works of man, and his vanished life speaks again. The poor hut, the cliff-house clinging to rock, the pyramid in the sand, the temple lifted in measured splendor, each retains some portion of its maker’s hope, fear, discipline, and dream.

The builder has gone down into dust, the city has fallen silent, the rite has ceased; yet the stone keeps memory. Towers, tombs, shrines, and ruined walls are the autobiography of humanity, written by labor and aspiration.

Cruel, proud, ignorant, devout, and daring, man has everywhere built with his face turned toward the Unseen.

Architecture began in need, in the demand for cover, warmth, defense, and rest; yet from the first the builder asked for a dwelling fitted to his inward life.

The roof answered the body, the form answered the soul. In seeking shelter he also sought relation, measure, likeness, and permanence. His work became beautiful because use had received shape, and shape had received meaning.

The hand that piled stones for safety soon obeyed another impulse, deeper and more imperious, the desire to bring earth into sympathy with the heavens, and to make necessity bear the impress of faith.

Man moves through a universe of signs, whether he names them or passes them in blindness. His speech, his labor, his dwelling, his worship, his commonest act, all carry outward the inward force placed within him.

The hut raised against wind and rain is already a confession of thought; the wall is an idea made visible; the roof is a doctrine of shelter; the threshold is the first rude line between chaos and order. Thus man, in building, reveals himself.

He leaves upon clay, timber, and stone the impress of that secret life which works through him and seeks form under heaven.

One Fire burns behind the altars of the world.

The wise of every land have known it under many names. Around it stood the seers, lawgivers, prophets, philosophers, mystics, and builders of the ages. Orpheus touched it through harmony. Hermes veiled it in sacred doctrine. Krishna declared it upon the battlefield of duty. Buddha bore it in compassion and mastery. Jesus shone with it in purity of heart. Zoroaster, Moses, Confucius, Mohammed, and many others served the same divine Principle according to the measure appointed to their work.

Their creeds differed in garment, language, symbol, and temple. Their labor was one. They sought to awaken man to the Flame within himself, the living fire by which the lower nature is purified and the soul remembers its divine origin.

Universal Co-Masonry stands within this great current of spiritual fraternity. It teaches that the human being is a temple, that virtue is the fuel of the lamp, and that all true builders labor in the light of the Eternal Flame.

A nation dies first in the soul.

Its walls may stand. Its armies may march. Its merchants may fill the markets. Its temples may still lift their columns into the sun. Yet when the light is withdrawn from the inner altar, the body of that people has already begun to fall.

Greece, Rome, Egypt, and every mighty name written upon the stones of history speak the same law. A civilization is sustained by the fire of virtue. When discipline fails, when appetite governs, when fear, hatred, luxury, and spiritual blindness enter the sanctuary, the altar grows cold.

Then the temple remains, but the indwelling presence departs. The ashlar loses its measure. The column loses its strength. The city becomes a shell around an extinguished lamp.

The task of the Mason is to keep the fire living. Within the soul, within the Lodge, within the common life of mankind, the Flame must be nourished by service, justice, truth, and self-command.

Few men know how much of civilization rests upon the vigilance of unseen servants.

In every age there have been souls who kept watch beside the altar of humanity. They were priests without trumpet, builders without monument, guardians of a fire which the world scarcely perceived while it warmed the very stones beneath its feet.

They labored for the Flame within man. They guarded that spiritual principle which survives the wreck of temples, the fall of cities, the dust of empires, and the forgetfulness of the multitude.

Such souls are the true Initiates. Their dignity was sacrifice. Their doctrine was service. Their temple was mankind. Their lamp was fed by discipline, silence, love, and obligation.

Universal Co-Masonry honors this sacred labor. The work of the builder begins where selfishness ends, and every life consecrated to truth becomes a lamp set upon the altar of the world.
