We're located in St.Pete/Pinellas County close to a 275 ramp

Like Tom Holland, many of us develop strategies over time to help us; especially those of us who were undiagnosed and had to develop these compensation measures on our own.
This is why Dyslexia can look very different in adults, teens, and older children than young children.
Tom Holland, another example of great disability representation.

For many students, especially those who are autistic and ND, attending school in and of itself is traumatic.
Trauma does not have to mean surviving violence, seeing traumatic events, or experiencing abuse.
It can be just be all of these factors occurring for 8 hours a day for 180 days.

This is also called neuroception.
It is the basis for every social, environmental interaction.
For kids who cry or resist going to certain places-school, activities, therapies, relatives, etc- even though "nothing has happened".
This is why.
Their nervous system does not feel safe in that setting.
Ignoring that distress, does not help "make them tougher" or "not be spoiled".
Trauma-Informed Insight Series:
Felt Safety: More Than Being Safe
Felt safety means a child’s brain believes, “I am safe here.”
Steady adults, predictable routines, and trusted relationships help students move from survival mode to learning mode.

If your therapy providers, teachers, etc aren't doing these, are they really neuro affirming or are they just using a buzz word to bring you in?
Being neuroaffirming is an action.
Autistic, neurodivergent kids deserve specialized providers that truly understand them.
Acceptance in therapy means designing the space, the pace, and the relational style around how Autistic and neurodivergent nervous systems actually work.
For me, the difference has meant finding a therapist who understands that accessing my internal world looks a bit more theoretical and philosophical. It means being comfortable asking to reduce certain sensory inputs, engaging in more meta communication, or using written words when necessary. It means having my sensory and processing and internal world understood as part of the work.
If you're a therapist looking for more guidance, our clinical trainings (including one that introduces the Autistic SPACE framework for therapy practice) are 30% off this month for Mental Health Month.
This wraps up our Autism Acceptance in Action series. Thanks for following along.
