🏴‍☠️ AHOY, MATEYS!!! Learner Lab was invaded by PERILOUS PIRATES today! 😂🧭🪢

And THIS is exactly why we ❤️ opportunities to learn through experience!

Today's Prenda Learner Lab took our learners on a LIVE pirate adventure where they didn't just hear about pirate skills...

They TRIED THEM. 😍

🧭 FIRST UP: NAVIGATION!

Our learners explored how compasses work and why they point north.

But why simply TALK about it when you can experiment with it? 😉

So our pirates investigated magnetism and built their OWN simple compasses using magnetized needles and water. 🧲🧭

Would they actually point north?

There was only one way to find out...

TEST THEM! 👀

Then came another essential pirate skill...

🪢 KNOT TYING!

Watch.
Listen.
Attempt.
Untangle. 😂
Try again.

Let's just say it looked considerably easier when our pirate instructor demonstrated it. 🤣

And THAT'S where the learning gets really good.

Ask a question.
Make a prediction.
Build something.
Test it.
Compare the results.
Adjust.
Try again.

Then learn a completely different hands-on skill and keep going. ❤️

🧭 Compasses were explored.
🧲 Magnetism was investigated.
🪢 Knots were tied.
🤝 Learners helped one another.
😂 And a little pirate chaos was definitely involved.

Who knew learning could be so...

A VERY interesting box of supplies arrived today because tomorrow our learners get to participate in a LIVE NATIONWIDE Prenda | Student-Centered Microschools Learners Lab event with learners from across the country! 🎉

We're pretty excited over here. ❤️

And judging by the contents of this box, tomorrow's learning is going to be VERY hands-on. 🤣

We've got some clues...

🥣 And bowls...

Okay, friends... I found something that would be an AMAZING addition to our learning community, and I'm trying something new:

I'm asking our community to help us make it happen! ❤️

RIWI makes GIANT foam building blocks, and the possibilities for our learners are pretty incredible!

🪑 Conquer Lab: Learners can actually design and build their OWN flexible seating and workspaces.

🏗️ Create & Collaborate: Engineering challenges, problem-solving, designing, testing, rebuilding, and working together.

🏃 Brain Breaks: Active, creative movement that gets learners away from screens and moving their bodies.

🏰 And just plain FUN: Forts. Towers. Houses. Obstacle courses. Spaceships. And whatever else their imaginations come up with! 🤣

🧠 Wait... ANOTHER Brain Break?” 😂

Yep. ❤️

At Empowered GOALS Center, our learners work in 20-minute focused learning blocks—and then they regularly get opportunities to step away, move, play, talk, think, or simply reset.

That's not time I've taken away from learning.

It's part of how I've designed the learning to happen.

During my master's program in Curriculum & Instruction for Gifted Education, I dug deep into the science behind WHY.

I explored fascinating research about active breaks and on-task behavior, movement and brain health, BDNF, and something I especially love: what may continue happening with newly learned information even *after* active instruction stops. 🧠❤️

It also reinforced something that's incredibly important to our model at Empowered:

Brain Breaks aren't simply about giving kids a few minutes off.

They're opportunities for learners to begin discovering what THEIR brains and bodies need to focus, regulate, reset, and return ready to learn.

🎳☀️ POV: Friday Field Adventures when Florida is WEATHERING...

AKA...

IT'S HOT OUTSIDE. 🤣🥵

So after spending our morning exploring Turtle Park, Part TWO of today's Friday Field Adventure took us somewhere with a little less nature...

and a LOT more air conditioning. 😂

🎳 BOWLING!!!

And once again...

NO MUSIC on this Reel.

Because you HAVE to hear this. ❤️

The cheers.
The encouragement.
The celebrations.
The “OOOOOOHHHHH!”
The reactions when that ball is headed toward the pins.
And the collective investment in EVERY. SINGLE. ROLL. 🤣

There were strikes.
There were spares.
There were balls that took their SWEET time reaching those pins. 😂

And apparently there were moments dramatic enough to require dropping to our knees and personally WILLING the pins to fall. 🤣🎳

But my favorite part wasn't anybody's score.

It was hearing our learners cheer for EACH OTHER. ❤️

That's community.

Celebrating your own win is fun.

Being genuinely excited when somebody ELSE succeeds?

That's something worth building. 💚🌳

And THAT'S one of the reasons Friday Field Adventures matter to me.

Yes, we're exploring beyond our campus.

Yes, we're trying new things.

Yes, we're having FUN.

But we're also building friendships, practicing encouragement, making memories, and becoming a community.

Today gave us BOTH sides of a Florida Friday Field Adventure:

🐢🌿 PART ONE: Nature, wildlife & outdoor exploration.

🎳❄️ PART TWO: BOWLING WITH... AIR CONDITIONING. 😂

Because experiential learning is wonderful...

but so is climate control. 🤣🤣🤣

Another Friday Field Adventure in the books. ❤️

And judging by those cheers...

I'd say this one was a HIT. 🎳😉

👂🌳 POV: Things you may hear on a Friday Field Adventure... 😉

THIS is the soundtrack.

Questions.
Excited discoveries.
Learners calling one another over to LOOK AT THIS!
Wildlife.
Conversations.
Laughter.
And approximately 472 observations being made simultaneously. 😂❤️

Welcome to PART ONE of today's Empowered GOALS Friday Field Adventures—with our friends from Rooted Learning Academy joining us! 💚🌳

One of the things I LOVE about Friday Field Adventures is that they give our learners opportunities to build relationships beyond their own learning community, too. ❤️

We started with time outside to explore, move, play, and see what we could discover.

Then we headed into the Nature Center...

And THIS is where things got really interesting. 👀

🐍 Reptiles.
🦉 Birds of prey.
🐢 Turtles.
🌿 Local wildlife.
🙋 LOTS of questions.

Our learners had opportunities to observe animals up close, talk with the Nature Center educators, explore the exhibits, and follow their curiosity wherever it took them.

And that owl encounter?! 😍🦉

THIS is why our Friday Field Adventures aren't simply "field trips."

They're opportunities to take learning beyond our campus.

To wonder.
To notice.
To ask questions.
To experience something firsthand.
To spend time together.
And sometimes...

to just stand there completely fascinated by a turtle. 😂🐢❤️

No worksheet required.

Just curious learners experiencing their world.

Friday Field Adventures.
Real-world learning.
Real experiences.
Real relationships.

💚 POV: Give learners autonomy... and AMAZING things can happen.

One of my favorite parts of Empowered is watching what learners create when an idea is THEIR idea. ❤️

This creation began during Learners' Choice.

No assigned project.
No step-by-step directions.
No example to copy.

Just resources, imagination, and the freedom to CREATE. 🥰

Then came another important part...

Sharing their creations.

Learners practiced presenting their projects, listening to peers, asking questions, and offering constructive feedback.

Creating matters.

Learning to communicate your ideas—and respectfully respond to someone else's—matters, too. 💚

📚 And did I mention the BOOKS?! 😂

We're continually adding resources that are interesting, fun, weird, fascinating, educational—or ALL OF THE ABOVE. 🤣

💻 Then it was time for CONQUER.

Personalized goals.
Learner-selected seating.
Focused academic time.
Different learners working on the skills THEY need.

And then...

🧲 CrunchLabs MISSION MAGLEV!

Learners explored magnetic force by testing the strength of different magnets.

They measured.
Recorded data.
Compared results.
Collaborated.
Checked measurements.
Asked questions.

And discovered that experiments don't always produce exactly what you EXPECT. 😉

THAT'S where some of the best learning happens.

Create.
Explain.
Question.
Test.
Measure.
Collaborate.
Reflect.
Try again.

That's a pretty good peek into an Empowered day. ❤️🌳

🕺🏽✨ Today's adventure is OFF THE WALL & A THRILLER for our learners...

🎩 MICHAEL JACKSON DAY! 🎶

And they absolutely understood their OWN plans for the assignment. 😂

Fedoras.
The glove.
Blazers.
Leather jackets.
MJ poses.

And then Mr. Billups walked in ready for the occasion, too. 😎🔥

But here's what I LOVE about Spirit Week at Empowered...

The FUN becomes part of our day without replacing the LEARNING. ❤️

💻 Our Michael Jackson crew still headed into CONQUER LAB to work toward their personalized Reading, ELA, Writing, and Math goals.

🎩 Yes, apparently the fedora stays on over the headphones when you're committed to the theme. 🤣

🧲 During COLLABORATE, we continued our CrunchLabs Mission: Maglev adventure with a new question:

How can we figure out how to get our Maglev trains to MOVE?

That led us to planning our next experiment with...

🧲 MORE MAGNETS. 🧲

Coming tomorrow.

Ahem... thanks, Amazon. 😳🤣

And because it was MICHAEL JACKSON DAY (and Wednesday)...

Of course we had MUSIC. 🎶

Mr. Billups of JDV Studios joined us for Music Enrichment, bringing another opportunity to explore rhythm, music, and performance together.

So yes...

We dressed up.
We laughed.
We posed.
We played.
We learned.
We experimented.
We created.
We made music.

And we may have spent an unreasonable amount of time perfecting our Michael Jackson poses. 🤣

THAT'S Spirit Week... Empowered style. 💚🌳

Learning doesn't have to stop for the fun.

Sometimes the fun becomes part of what makes the learning community memorable. ❤️

🎭💚 POV: DAY TWO of Spirit Week at Empowered G.O.A.L.S. Center...

Apparently we decided learning needed a little EXTRA personality this week. 🤣❤️

The costumes continued...

but so did the learning.

💻 During CONQUER, our learners settled into their personalized Reading, ELA, and Math goals—working at their own levels, using the resources and supports that help THEM move forward.

Then we headed back to the BADLANDS! 🏜️🦬

Our National Parks Adventures continued as learners researched, explored, and added more discoveries to their Badlands National Park Fact Finders.

And then...

Things got SLIMY. 😂

🧪 CREATE LAB = SLIME DAY!!!

Mixing.
Measuring.
Experimenting.
Adding color.
Adding sparkle.
Squishing.
Stretching.

And perhaps making just a tiny bit of a mess. 🤣

Okay...

Maybe more than a tiny bit. 😂❤️

Meanwhile, our newest Learners' Choice resources are already getting a workout.

🧱 LEGO creations are multiplying.

🔵 Marble Run Adventures are STILL going strong.

And learners continue using their Brain Breaks and free-choice time to build, test, redesign, problem-solve, and create simply because they're curious about what they can make next.

That's one of the things I love most about an Empowered day.

Academic growth can happen alongside creativity.

Structure can exist alongside choice.

Focused work can happen alongside FUN.

And apparently National Parks research can happen on the same day we're up to our elbows in glittery slime. 🤣💚
