Celebrate National DNA Day with a full day of hands-on science fun at Bonnet Springs Park 🧬✨

Start your morning at STEM in the Park on Saturday, April 25 from 10AM–12PM in the GiveWell Community Foundation Nature Center! Explore the building blocks of life as you create DNA origami, examine your own fingerprints, interact with DNA replicas, and even extract DNA from strawberries with PhilanthroLab 🍓🔬

Keep the curiosity going at our Classroom Drop-In from 1PM–3PM in the Nature Center Classroom! Dive deeper into fingerprint exploration, handle DNA models, and take part in the City Nature Challenge using iNaturalist 🌿📱

These events are free and open to all ages (adult supervision required).

In 2009 I began working at the Science Center of Pinellas County (currently closed). I was the only Florida certified teacher staffed and had quickly been assigned to develop curriculum. One of those curriculums was for Forensics.

I had seen CSI shows here and there. Had no interest in crime-solving in particular. However, what fascinated me then and still does today is the different jobs that are under the umbrella of Forensic Science.

The curriculum that I created was first a 90-minute class, then a Full-Week Camp. One Summer, the Science Center had been partnered with Pinellas County Schools and I was the Lead to having 75 4th grade students rotate through 3 different labs per day for that week.

It was the last curriculum that I taught at the Science Center, in the summer camp of 2016, when I found out I was pregnant with my daughter Hazel.
I started Philanthrolab Science Shop 6 months after she was born, October 2017.

For next school year, 2026/2027, I get to share 12 Crime Solving Science lessons with the homeschoolers of JMJLargo. Excited is an understatement of what it means to revive and return full-circle of what I have been capable of doing as an educator for the last 20 years.

The journey to developing curriculum after curriculum for 2 businesses has me always researching, planning, purchasing, and organizing.

Today is my daughter's 9th birthday. In 6 months, Philanthrolab Science Shop turns 9, too. What a great way to celebrate the first 10 years of inspiring a love of science! 🥽🥼💡🧪
