Meet Dr. Selma D. Yznaga, Professor in the UTRGV Department of Counseling at the Brownsville campus! With decades of experience in education and school counseling, Dr. Yznaga has dedicated her career to supporting students and preparing future counseling professionals. Learn more about her journey, experiences, and what inspires her work down below:

I earned a bachelor’s degree in education from Southwest Texas State University (now Texas State) in San Marcos and began my career as an elementary school teacher in Brownsville and later taught in Austin. My master’s degree is in counseling from UT-Brownsville, and the year I graduated I moved to Houston and then San Antonio to become an elementary school counselor. My PhD in counselor education and supervision was earned at St. Mary’s University in San Antonio. I came home to Brownsville to help care for my father and worked as a high school counselor at Porter before joining the UTB counseling faculty in 2001. I have worked in public education for 40 years!
