Getting pretty close to that time of year….. I will be doing a couple of “Bucks in Velvet” photo day trips later this month. Looking forward to some great bucks and changing weather.

Saying goodbye to animals I have loved is never easy. Today marks one year since I last saw my long time friend and nemesis Abel, the oldest surviving member of the West Meadow Herd at La Bota Ranch. I interacted with him for over 10 years. He was a very intelligent though [sometimes] aggressive buck. This photo was taken several years ago on the Northwest Ridge in the western sector of the ranch. I've been holding on to all hope that he would show up, somehow, some way, but he hasn't and I will not only miss him but will never forget all the adventures we went through together. He was often feisty and a dangerous buck, and on more than one occasion I had to fire my .45 handgun to divert his aggressive advances (rush) around the time(s) of the rut. He was best known for always displaying an ear drop; I'll miss that most. Abel was last seen on March 13, 2022 at approximately 7:15 p.m. in the West Meadow; he had already shed his antlers and was just a shadow of his former self. Goodbye Abel, and rest easy.
