Julieta & Frank Staggs Academy of International & STEM Studies We are an innovative, University-level academy on its campus for highly gifted and motivated high school juniors and seniors focusing on STEM.

Enabled by legislation authored by State Senator Judith Zaffirini and approved by the 79th Texas Legislature in 2005, The Texas Academy of International and STEM Studies provides academically motivated high school juniors and seniors with a challenging University-level curriculum. Upon completion of the their two years in the Academy, students will have earned their high school diploma concurrently with college credits toward a bachelor’s degree and will be in their junior year of University.

✨Alumni Spotlight: Dr. Alyssa Sarmiento✨

From Staggs Academy to serving her hometown community, Dr. Alyssa Sarmiento’s educational journey is an example of dedication and perseverance.

After graduating from Staggs Academy, Dr. Sarmiento earned her Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry from St. Mary’s University and went on to earn her Doctor of Pharmacy(PharmD) from Texas A&M University in 2025. Today, she has returned to Laredo, where she works as a pharmacist at a local hospital , making a difference in the lives of patients every day.
“Staggs Academy helped give me an early start in my career. The Academy kept me focused , driven , and motivated to continue my education while providing resources that aided my journey .”

⭐️Alumni Spotlight: Fatima Rodriguez ⭐️

Fatima Rodriguez, a 2022 graduate of Staggs Academy and Valedictorian of her class, earned her Bachelor of Science in Biology from TAMIU in 2023. She continued her academic journey by obtaining her Master of Public Health degree from Sam Houston State University in 2025.

We are proud to congratulate Fatima on her acceptance into the University of the Incarnate Word Occupational Therapy Doctorate (OTD) Program, where she will begin her studies in Fall 2026 with an anticipated graduation in 2029.
