In 2020, a child in the remote Alaska village of Igiugig needed emergency medical evacuation to Anchorage. When the medevac plane arrived, the runway lights at the small state-owned airport failed to turn on despite repeated attempts to activate them.

Villagers, including resident Ida Nelson, quickly mobilized. A neighbor made 32 phone calls, and many in the community drove cars and ATVs to the runway. They lined up the vehicles along both sides of the strip with headlights blazing to create a path of light. Coordinating with the pilot by phone, as he reported he could see the runway, they guided the LifeMed King Air to a safe landing.

The child was successfully evacuated. The story highlighted the determination and quick thinking of a tiny rural Alaska community when the runway lighting failed.

The future is now

After years of Waymos and other driverless cars basically operating with their own rules, California is finally letting cops ticket autonomous vehicles starting July 2026. Instead of trying to hand a speeding ticket to an empty driver’s seat like a confused NPC, police can now send violations straight to companies like Waymo and Zoox when their robo-cars blow red lights, block emergency scenes, or do dumb traffic stuff. The new rules also force AV companies to answer emergency calls within 30 seconds and move their cars out of danger zones when first responders show up — which honestly sounds like we’re one step away from cops arguing with a customer service hotline while a robotaxi locks itself in park mode.
