Teacher in Sweden suspended after giving students homework assignment to plan terror attack 12/18/2023

This news item immediately brought to mind our assignment in Mr. S's class (1965?) tasking us to create propaganda (Tootsie Roll Pops vs Bubblegum!). Maybe the best way to understand something egregious is to learn about it while trying to create it? But, I don't think Mr S would be as politically blind as to give us the particular assignment in this article!

Although, in this day-and-age, learning how to create a false alternative-reality through propaganda would probably be applauded as a skill, not condemned as unethical.

It is with great sadness that I have to report that our classmate, Larry Klipstein passed away within the last day or so. Larry was my best friend throughout my years at the end of elementary school and into junior high, and we spent endless hours together. They say you know people best when they were your friends in elementary school, and I really did know Larry very well and admired him greatly. I lost touch with him for many years, but thanks to the internet I eventually found him in Charlotte, NC working at an Infinity dealer. I did connect with him several times in recent years.

Last February he and I had a great dinner together in Charlotte, NC, where he lived. He was enjoying life - which consisted mostly of golf and ci**rs with a circle of like-minded friends, and was still working at the Infinity dealer. He was very proud of the sobriety which he maintained and had worked on for decades.

He didn't make it to any of the reunions - but we discussed how everyone was doing in great detail and he was very interested in everyone's progress in life.

Goodbye, Larry my old friend, you probably wouldn't understand, but you will be missed.

Charles Silverstein, 87, Dies; Helped Destigmatize Homosexuality 02/08/2023

Hi all – I posted this on my page today and thought I would share it with you. Any thoughts you have would be greatly appreciated.

It did seem like he would live forever, but I guess not.

On January 30th, I lost a teacher, friend and mentor. Dr Silverstein/Mr. S/Charles has been a huge part of my life ever since he put up with an up-to-that-point uncontrollable me in 5th grade at Chatsworth Avenue school. Relentlessly supportive, this great man has helped guide me through life.

Our relationship was not without its “moments,“ as all truly important relationships are. He was never hesitant to point out when he thought I was pointing myself in the wrong direction, but in a loving way. Another older friend told me a very long time ago that “your true friends are not the ones who pat you on the back, they are the ones who kick you in the ass”. I think that Charles would be happy to be included in that second category.

I’m hoping that his wise guidance will carry me through the rest of my life. I miss him so much already.

EXHIBITION: Street Visions: Europe 1934 Captured in Rare Photographs by Richard J. Scheuer 09/26/2022

THURSDAY OCT 6th, several of our Mr. S classmates will be meeting me at the exhibition I’m having in Manhattan. I plan to be there from 5 PM to 7 PM (I can come earlier if you can only make it before that time) and so far Chad Donahue, Richard Nesdale, John Rubino, Cynthia Wang, and possibly Mike Smith plan to be there. Unfortunately, the gallery is closed Friday through Sunday so this is the only time during the reunion weekend we can do this.

Please let me know if you want to come too.

This message from Jeff Frieden:

For those following "Mr. Silverstein's Class at Chatsworth" I wanted to point out that there will be a (belated) 50th reunion of the 1971 MHS class, which many of us also belong to, over Columbus Day weekend. You can get details on the MHS Class of 1971 page. If enough of us attend -- I intend to -- perhaps we can have another Mr. S reunion too!
