Thank you to everyone who joined our live August webinar, "Language and Justice for All: How Targeting Language Empowers Students." Dr. Kirby summarized research and provided examples of how language can be used in both assessment and instruction to improve equity in education. Dr. Kirby presented research showing that without a valid and reliable measure of language comprehension, literacy screeners are not detecting nor facilitating early reading intervention. Further, language is the foundation of reading comprehension (decoding skills are pivotal, not foundational skills!) and stories are a wonderful way to teach background knowledge and inferential reasoning, discourse and sentence structures, vocabulary, and lead to the development of strong self-advocacy and resiliency-building.
