UW SER Receives New Excellence Fund to Support Hands-On Learning and Student Innovation

Partner Wednesday // The James E. Nielson Energy Excellence Fund for the School of Energy Resources was created in 2006 to further the mission of SER and to foster excellence among its beneficiaries.

At the time when Mr. Nielson established a charitable remainder trust—a commitment matched by the state of Wyoming matching program—the James E. Nielson Energy Excellence Fund was the largest endowment made to an academic program in UW’s history.

The discretionary nature of the gift means that the SER Executive Director has the flexibility to direct the funds to the areas of greatest need. Higher education and innovative research efforts are not static. They are dynamic and constantly changing over the course of time, with their priorities changing with them. Mr. Nielson had the foresight to anticipate this challenge and trusted the leadership at SER to make the best decisions possible with his truly transformative gift.

The James E. Nielson Energy Excellence Fund has created a lasting legacy to benefit generations of students, researchers, and faculty at the University of Wyoming.

Partner Wednesday // On September 12, 2013, the University of Wyoming unveiled SER’s new home—the Energy Innovation Center (EIC). This state-of-the-art research and collaboration facility was built with the goal of positioning Wyoming as a global leader in energy education, research, and outreach.

The EIC represents the investment in Wyoming and the commitment to SER’s mission: energy-driven economic development for the state of Wyoming. We extend our gratitude to the founding organizations and individuals who made the concept for the Energy Innovation Center a reality.

UW Works with Wyoming DEQ-AML, UR Energy on Soil Reclamation Project Using Coal Char

The Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality Abandoned Mine Lands Division (WDEQ-AML), UR Energy USA and the University of Wyoming have formed a collaborative five-year research partnership to advance soil health and mine reclamation technologies. The project evaluates innovative soil amendments, including state-produced coal char, to accelerate the restoration of disturbed lands to productive native rangelands across Wyoming. By partnering directly with UW, WDEQ-AML and industry are creating a real-world research environment to evaluate nascent reclamation practices and generate the scientific data needed to move promising applications toward commercial adoption....

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the School of Energy Resources.

In 2006, the Wyoming Legislature established the University of Wyoming's School of Energy Resources to strengthen the state's energy future through a dedicated focus on research, education, and industry engagement.

Created to support Wyoming's economy and prepare the next generation of energy leaders, the School serves as a bridge between the university, industry, government, and communities.
