UW Giving Day has started, and WYOBIRD is hoping to get your help in raising funds to support training undergraduates and providing more outreach opportunities to the public. (See more pictures from the last year in the recent posts below!)

With the funds that we raised last year, we were able to pay for 14 undergraduate interns! We had 8 interns who gained skills in banding birds at our migratory banding station here in Laramie. We had another 6 undergraduates work with us over the summer on a nest box study at Hutton NWR. This year, we are hoping to do the same and raise enough funds to pay all of our undergraduate interns. We don't want our undergraduate students to not have the opportunity to gain these hands-on skills because they need to take a separate paid job.

Giving Day 2025 has launched! WYOBIRD students have been hard at work gaining hands-on, practical experience in field ornithology and giving back to the Wyoming community! From capturing toucans to tracking birds with small radios to learning how to use AI and novel sensors to understand bird communication, they have done it all this year! Please support the development of these spectacular students! Two of our students, Reina Galvan and Michael Castaño, took their research to new heights this past weekend and teamed up with for a Science Cafe in Jackson, WY, where they presented their findings entirely in Spanish! 🏔️🙌

Huge congratulations to Master’s student, Erin Stewart, on successfully defending her thesis, “You are what you tweet: What song reveals about fighting ability in tropical birds.” Way to go! 🎉🦜🎶

We had a wonderful time at the UW STEM Carnival today teaching kids and adults about birds and how we research them. It was non-stop for 4 hrs with over 1,000 people coming to our tables. So we managed to only get 1 picture. But we loved it! Thanks to everyone that came out and thanks to our WYOBIRD students that helped!
