Please join us for WWAMI’s Fall Grand Rounds: Strategies for Producing Rural Healthcare Professionals
• Tuesday, September 22
• 12:30–1:30 p.m.
• Coe Library, Room 506

This fall’s featured speaker is Dr. Mark Deutchman, Clinical Professor at the University of Colorado School of Medicine and Associate Dean for Rural Health. As the founding director of the university's highly successful Rural Program, he has dedicated over 20 years to training the next generation of healthcare leaders for rural, underserved areas. A passionate advocate for rural workforce pipeline development, Dr. Deutchman also holds faculty appointments in Public Health and Dental Medicine, and is a recognized expert in rural workforce development and pioneer in point-of-care ultrasound. The Rural Program receives significant funding through the CU Anschutz School of Medicine, the Department of Family Medicine, and has received philanthropic gifts from organizations such as the Colorado Trust and Colorado Health Foundation, federal grants, and private supporters.

Big well done to our 1st years for finishing up their first block of medical school today! The Fundamentals of Medical Science & Research (FMR) block introduces students to foundational basic science and research concepts in medicine and covers a wide range of topics including molecular and cell biology; human physiology, genetics and biochemistry; community health and disease; clinical epidemiology, research study design and data analysis. Wyoming WWAMI was thrilled to participate in the recent Wyoming Healthcare Classic in Douglas! Thank you to the Wyoming Health Resources Network and Amanda Teppo for hosting! Todd Guth, April French, and E-24 Shay Nelson attended to represent WWAMI, with Dr. Guth's team winning 2nd place! Funds were raised to support WHRN in their work to recruit healthcare workers - including WWAMI alumni - to Wyoming.

“With six confirmed cases in Wyoming and decreased vaccination rates in Park County, we are at risk for a measles outbreak. My hope is that bringing public awareness to measles will help prevent that.” Second-year medical student and Powell native Jordan Moore recently wrote an article in the Powell Tribune about preventing measles outbreaks. Jordan has been training at Powell Valley Healthcare over the summer as part of his WWAMI medical curriculum!

As part of their orientation activities, our first-year medical students take part in a wilderness medicine orientation with the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) in Lander, WY. It’s a great experience for our students to start team building and learn wilderness focused medical training!

Congratulations to Wyoming WWAMI alum Dr. Kim Westbrook for winning the Lifetime Achievement Award for Distinguished Engineer/Scientist from the UW College of Engineering and Physical Sciences!
Dr. Westbrook graduated from the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences before entering the WWAMI program, ultimately returning to practice in Laramie, WY. She founded the Ivinson Medical Group Women’s Health Clinic in 2018 and recently opened Ascent Medical Spa.
Dr. Westbrook also plays a valuable role in the education of the next generation of Wyoming physicians, both teaching our students in the classroom and serving as a preceptor to help our students gain hands-on experience and improve clinical skills!

Wyoming WWAMI graduate Dr. Tom Robitaille recently wrote an opinion piece about the need to recognize "rural generalist medicine" as its own specialty.
